Appearance
Kagaya has fair skin and black shoulder-length hair. He bears a curse that slowly kills him, giving his skin a decaying appearance, which spreads over his face and eyes, leaving him unable to see. By the time of his death, the curse had spread across his entire body, making movement almost impossible. At the moment of Kagaya's death, Muzan described him as having the smile of a Buddha.
He wears a plain black kimono secured by a beige-woven obi over a white juban. He also dons a white haori that reaches his calves, featuring a unique design of gradually fading purple and salmon-pink flames rising from the hem to halfway up the sleeves.
Personality:

Kagaya possesses a calm demeanor, displaying genuine care for the members of the Demon Slayer Corps, whom he considers as his own children. He is also adept at handling criticism and is honest about his weaknesses, one of which is his inability to become a demon slayer himself, even though he is their primary leader. To compensate, he remembers each member of the Corps and makes daily visits to the graves of the deceased members until his illness prevents him from doing so.
Although he may appear lenient, Kagaya carefully considers reason and unbiased situations. This is evident when he willingly accepted the situation of Tanjiro and Nezuko (through a letter from Sakonji Urokodaki) and even defended their cause when others opposed them. His manner of speaking, though typically gentle and smooth, is extremely tactful, using words and intonations in a way that makes others listen. His charismatic and tactful speech is even able to make Muichiro Tokito, who is initially passive, and Sanemi Shinazugawa, who is impulsive, pay attention without causing any irritation.
With his own family, Kagaya is strict, as due to the family curse, he had to prepare them early to take his place as the leader of the Demon Slayers. Despite this, he still shows the same gentle aura and behavior toward them.
Beneath his otherwise kind and gentle personality, Kagaya harbored deep, burning hatred toward Muzan Kibutsuji. As the cause of his family's cursed life, he exhibited an unusual, silent anger toward the demon. He addressed Muzan without showing fear or hesitation, repeatedly mocking his intentions to become an eternal being. In his final moments, he wore a smile to lure Muzan into a false sense of security while activating his trap. Despite his deep hatred, Muzan was astonished that Kagaya hid his thirst for blood during their conversation and was shocked that Kagaya was willing to kill his own family from his point of view, underestimating how far he would go to weaken Muzan.
Abilities
Overall Capabilities:

Masquage des émotions: Kagaya possesses a remarkable ability to conceal his emotions and present an outwardly composed and controlled appearance. He uses this skill to maintain a calm and serene demeanor, deceiving others’ perceptions of him. When Muzan, the source of Kagaya’s deep hatred, confronts him at his home, Kagaya presents himself with the serene smile of a Buddha, effectively masking any trace of murderous intent. By erasing completely his combative spirit, animosity, and hatred, Kagaya successfully hides his true intentions, luring Muzan into a trap. It’s only when Kagaya sacrifices himself by detonating an explosive to trap Muzan that the demon realizes the depth of Kagaya’s hidden emotions. Muzan compares Kagaya’s concealed intent to a coiled viper hidden in the dark, lifeless pit of his stomach, deeply impressed by Kagaya's astonishing ability to veil his true nature.
Voix apaisante: Kagaya possesses the ability to put others at ease simply through the tone of his voice and the rhythm of his actions, as he demonstrated with Tanjiro Kamado and even the bloodthirsty Hashira. In modern times, this attribute is referred to as Fluctuation 1/F and is said to be possessed by many charismatic individuals, having the presence and strength to move a mass audience.

Supernatural abilities
Extrasensory perception: Kagaya possesses the supernatural ability to sense the presence of both humans and demons, as well as gauge their strength. This ability became evident during the Hashira meeting held after the events on Mount Natagumo. Even though he had lost his sight in both eyes due to his illness, Kagaya immediately felt the presence of individuals with Hashira-level power upon their arrival, expressing his satisfaction that they had all arrived at the meeting without any changes in personnel. Furthermore, when Muzan arrived at the Ubuyashiki estate with the intent to kill him, Kagaya immediately detected Muzan’s presence and greeted him, even though his eyes were fully covered by bandages, and Muzan remained outside the estate. This showcases his extraordinary sensory abilities.
Provisions: Kagaya, along with the rest of the Ubuyashiki family, possesses an enhanced level of foresight, which helps them avoid disasters and allows them to amass great wealth and fortune. This instinct has allowed Kagaya to make several accurate predictions that came true without him having prior knowledge, such as foreseeing that the only remaining weakness of Muzan was the sun and that he couldn’t be destroyed by decapitation. He accurately predicted that the death of Gyutaro and Daki would send waves that would see the upper ranks of the Twelve Kizuki beginning to lose members for the first time in centuries. Additionally, he foresaw that Muzan would seek him out, leading to the final war between the Demon Slayer Corps and the Twelve Kizuki within the five days of his own life left.
Anecdote:
- Kagaya shares his Japanese and English voice actors with Seijiro Kikuoka from Sword Art Online.
- As Kagaya mentioned, the illness that now affects him is the curse inflicted upon his family because they gave birth to the "original demon." This curse is a hereditary disease passed down through the Ubuyashiki lineage, leaving the family with weak bodies and a life expectancy of less than 30 years.
- Kagaya’s first name includes the kanji for "shine" (耀かが kaga) and the Kun'yomi for "how" (哉や ya); the “ya” in the first character is replaced by the second. His last name includes the Kun'yomi for "bear, give birth" (産うぶ Ubu), "house, shop" (屋や ya), and "spread" (敷しき Shiki).
- Kagaya’s father committed suicide when he was 19, unable to bear seeing his troupe members die over and over. His siblings also passed away, leaving him to inherit the family headship at the age of four.
- All male children born into the Ubuyashiki clan will die before reaching 30 years old. Female children from the clan must marry and change their surname before the age of 13, or they too will inevitably die from accidents or illness.
