Although the Japanese sword was created for warlike use, it is currently recognized as a work of art in its own right. Typically, the history of the Japanese sword is considered to be divided into five major historical periods: jōkotō swords, koto swords, shintō swords, shin-shintō swords, and gendaitō. Each of these periods represents a particular stream of forging.

Regarding its manufacture: Finished in a bevel, the katana blade is traditionally forged from a raw steel called Tamahagane transformed into composite steel. Hard for the shell, and softer for the core. They are each laminated many times, then intimately welded together at the forge. Then, by coating the back and sides with an insulating clay mixture, the blade undergoes a selective tempering, which will give the weapon the combined qualities of extreme hardness of the edge, as well as shock resistance for the whole.

The next step is polishing, done with volcanic stones of decreasing grain, which sharpens the blade by revealing the crystalline structures.

Indeed, the Katana is an extremely devastating weapon with respect to its razor sharpness, but it is also a "religious" and symbolic weapon that represents the strength, honor, and loyalty of the Japanese. Used especially during the Edo period by the samurais, this weapon was replaced and almost forgotten because of the globalization and the importation of firearms.

Summary of Bleach anime:

Ichigo Kurosaki is a 15 year old high school student, who could have been like the others, if he didn't see the wandering souls stuck on earth. His life is about to be turned upside down when he meets a shinigami (死神, literally "god of death"), Rukia Kuchiki, and the coming of a monster called hollow, who appeared wanting to devour him. Ichigo has only two choices: to become a Shinigami in order to save his family or to die with his family. Only, to become a Shinigami, Ichigo has to borrow a part of Rukia's power, which turns out to be a little bit bad because Rukia sucks all of it from him. After having easily defeated the Hollow, Ichigo has no other choice than to replace Rukia in his work until she recovers all her powers.

After absorbing the powers of the shinigami Rukia Kuchiki, Ichigo Kurosaki will be forced to do his job, which is to eliminate all the Hollows that appear in the city. During this part of the story, we meet the main protagonists: Orihime Inoue, Uryū Ishida, and Yasutora Sado. We also meet Kisuke Urahara, a somewhat enigmatic character as well as Yoruichi Shihouin, a former captain of the gotei 13 (the talking cat in the human world). The arc ends when Rukia is kidnapped by two shinigamis (Renji Abarai and Byakuya Kuchiki) having received the order to bring her back to the Soul Society. Indeed, she has stayed on earth without giving any news to the Soul Society for too long and is guilty of the crime of having given her power to a human.
