The lives of the sacrificed, often those close to them, are then offered to the creatures of darkness and ritually murdered. In the case of members of God Hand, the life force of the deceased is used to complete the summoner's transition.
The only two known survivors bearing this mark are Guts and Casca, who survived the eclipse creating Femto.
