⛩ Genin is the lowest rank of ninjas, but also the one that displays the greatest power disparity. When they become genin, ninjas start contributing to their village's economy by being sent on missions for which the village is paid. They are generally sent on D-rank missions, which are low-risk manual labor jobs, or, rarely, on C-rank missions, which are a step up and begin to approach true "ninja" work with a very low chance of risk for the involved ninja.
When Konoha lacked high-level ninjas due to the invasion, the village occasionally had to send genin on higher-rank missions. Naruto Uzumaki, who received the lowest scores, was placed on a team with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, who received the highest scores and the best results on the written exam, respectively.
Because genin are the lowest-level ninjas, they are usually assigned to D or C-rank missions to gain experience before undertaking more difficult missions or being promoted to the rank of chūnin, by passing the Chūnin Exams, a series of challenging tasks designed to test the skills of genin to determine if they are fit to become chūnin or not.
