The movie describes the fate of Goku and Vegeta as they encounter a new Saiyan named Broly. In the manga, it is said that Freezer caused trouble once again, although that's a story for another time. Nevertheless, both Saiyans emerged from the conflict even stronger than before.
During Goku and Vegeta's stay at the Galactic Patrol HQ, Goku describes the events to Merus, explaining that Freezer showed up on Earth searching for the Dragon Balls and brought another Saiyan with him. This Saiyan, Broly, was much stronger than him or Vegeta and continued to grow stronger until he eventually became a Super Saiyan, at which point they could no longer handle him even as Super Saiyan Blue.
As a result, they decided to fuse into Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta and were somehow able to win, and Broly returned to live on Vampa.
