TOP 10 of the best episodes of Sailor Moon!

Filler episodes often tend to detract from the quality of an anime, but Sailor Moon’s filler episodes feature compelling and humorous story arcs.

The original 1990s Sailor Moon anime starts with considerably long seasons. Seasons 1 and 2 each have over forty episodes, as the series deviated from the manga’s plot by adding numerous filler episodes. The creators followed the trend of anime and cartoons at the time, with many moral messages and slapstick humour scenes.

Filler episodes often tend to detract from the quality of an anime, but Sailor Moon’s filler episodes feature compelling and humorous story arcs. For original fans of Sailor Moon, many filler episodes evoke nostalgia for the most magical girls. Some episodes are also essential for exploring the characters and foreshadowing canonical events later in the series.

10/ Usagi sends a love letter to a radio station.

10 secrets de fabrication de Sailor Moon | VL Média

Love is a powerful force in Sailor Moon, and the Dark Kingdom tries to exploit the romantic love of girls and women. The stubborn Queen Beryl devises a plan to create a fake radio station that captures the energy of those who send in their love letters to be read on air. The senders want their emotions to be heard, perhaps by the object of their affection, only to have their energy ruthlessly stolen.

"The Mysterious Sleeping Sickness" shows a softer side of Usagi’s teacher, Mrs. Haruna, who signs her love letter "Hopeful Haruna". Mrs. Haruna may be a hardworking teacher, but she harbours a secret love that never came to fruition, and her letter is quite sentimental. This is also the episode where Usagi starts to truly recognize the crush she has on Tuxedo Mask and dreams prophetically of a day when her crush could turn into genuine love.

9/ Sailor Mars and Sailor Moon bicker comically

Sailor Mars is a newcomer to the Senshi at the start of the first season. Sailor Mars, Rei, is driven and has a pragmatic personality, while Sailor Moon is much more sensitive and whimsical. Their personalities naturally clash, and "Usagi vs. Rei: Nightmare in Dreamland" solidifies the tone of their dynamic.

Sailor Mars starts to have a crush on Tuxedo Mask, which makes Sailor Moon feel insecure and territorial. The two Senshi are drawn into the dreamlike world of the Dark Kingdom, exploiting the Senshi’s weakness for Tuxedo Mask. Their interactions with Tuxedo Mask are quite comical and foreshadow the eventual but brief encounter between Rei and Mamoru.

8/ The Inner Senshi get stuck on a cursed cruise ship.

Some of the villains in Sailor Moon and Youma are truly disturbing, like Thetis in "I Want a Boyfriend: The Luxury Cruise Ship Is a Trap". Once again, the Dark Kingdom exploits people’s desire for romantic love for their own energy-harvesting purposes. However, the episode is far from repetitive, as it follows with plenty of action and terrifying maritime horror.

Sailor Moon only uses her Disguise Pen a few times throughout the series, and she uses it to pose as a photographer in "I Want a Boyfriend". Filler episodes like this are perfect for allowing the Inner Senshi to bond with each other, as Rei and Ami attend the luxury cruise together as single women. Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars have only recently joined the Senshi crew, and their personalities already blend well as they navigate the ship haunted by the Youma.

7/ Usagi gets tricked by a modeling system.

Sailor Moon : où et quand acheter la version remarsterisée en Blu-ray et DVD en France ?

A storyline about modeling may seem frivolous, but "Usagi's a Model: The Flash of the Monster Camera" is filled with humour and nostalgia for Sailor Moon fans. The Dark Kingdom devises a modeling project, luring young people hoping for an artistic career. The concept is brilliant, echoing a very real modeling project that takes place in real life, where fake modeling agents exploit people’s hopes and dreams, draining them of their money.

"Usagi's a Model" is a tribute to 90s fashion and Japanese urban style, featuring layered outfits, overalls, cute swimsuits, and pastel colour palettes. There is also a strong interaction driven by tsundere between Mamoru and Usagi, where he talks to her about his work ethic and reveals that he used to be a model. This isn’t too surprising, given Mamoru’s grace, beauty, and personal style.

6/ Usagi and Mamoru finally begin to bond

Usagi and Mamoru reunite much earlier in the original manga and in Sailor Moon Crystal than in the original anime. Part of the reason their romance moves so slowly is due to the filler episodes. In the original anime adaptation, Usagi and Mamoru also have more tsundere personalities. While a tsundere-romance can be fun, it isn’t conducive to a smooth and gradually progressing romance.

"The Painting of Love: Usagi and Mamoru Grow Closer" is one of the first times Mamoru and Usagi spend time together. They have already shared sweet moments as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, but they continue to bicker tumultuously in their civilian forms. Mamoru sees a painting that reminds him of a dream he had about his past life with Usagi, and the two eventually pose together in a painting by the same artist.

5/ Mamoru shows his caring side.

Usagi eventually ends up living with her future daughter, Chibiusa, later in the series, and she treats Chibiusa more like an annoying little sister than like her own daughter. This is understandable, as Usagi is still quite young when a small Chibiusa lands on her lap. Fortunately for Chibiusa, Mamoru is ready to be a more nurturing presence.

"Usagi and Mamoru's Babysitting Mayhem" foreshadows Mamoru’s responsibility, patience, and parenting skills several episodes before Chibiusa’s arrival. Usagi and Mamoru take on a babysitting job together, and Usagi learns a great deal from Mamoru’s kindness and natural talent with children. Naoko Takeuchi wrote her characters outside of traditional gender dynamics, and it’s wonderful to see a well-rounded and thought-provoking male main character.

4/ Sailor Mercury finds her match

Sailor Mercury, Ami, is the fans’ favourite Inner Senshi, and the audience can never get enough of her. She has a stunning aquatic colour palette, from her hair to her boots, along with dream-based powers centered on bubbles. Mercury is also the most quick-witted and intelligent Senshi, often serving as the charming but sharp voice of reason. "Crushing on Ami: The Boy Who Can See the Future" is a filler episode dedicated to Sailor Mercury.

Sailor Moon is about friendship, magic, action, and romance. Sailor Mercury gets a small and rare romantic interlude in "Crushing on Ami" with a character who seems perfectly suited for her. Ami could never be with someone who isn’t interesting or dull. Not only does Ryo have perfect grades to rival Ami’s, but he also possesses incredible psychic abilities.

3/ Poor Chibiusa goes through a tough time.

Sailor Moon (Franchise) - TV Tropes

A girl with a great responsibility, longing for the mother she misses. The episode "In Search of the Silver Crystal: Chibi-Usa's Secret" reminds the audience of these facts. Chibiusa struggles with loneliness and a heavy burden on her shoulders as she searches for the Silver Crystal for her mother.

Chibiusa confides her worries to Luna-P, who does his best to reassure the young child. Aside from character development, there is a certain mystery surrounding Chibiusa’s sudden appearance and the goal this filler episode reveals. Mamoru also takes on a parental and protective role for Chibiusa in "In Search of the Silver Crystal."

2/ Usagi struggles with jealousy.

To be together, Usagi must work through some of her insecurities.

In "Protect Mamoru: Ninja Usagi's Jealousy", Mamoru must temporarily stay at the Hikawa Shrine with Rei. Rei and Mamoru had a few difficult encounters that never developed into a relationship, and Usagi isn’t comfortable with the idea of them being in the same place. Rather than clearly expressing her feelings, Usagi concocts a plan to spy on them. The episode contains plenty of slapstick humour, and it’s a moment of learning for Usagi.

1/ Sailor Moon tries to help a brainwashed Endymion

Just as Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask regain their memories of their past lives and romance as Serenity and Endymion, Queen Beryl captures Tuxedo Mask. She further breaks Sailor Moon’s heart by brainwashing Tuxedo Mask into Dark Endymion, turning the love stolen from Sailor Moon against her. This marks a turning point in Sailor Moon, where Usagi faces growing emotional pain.

Endymion is brainwashed for several episodes, and Sailor Moon processes her feelings and grief in "I Won’t Run From Love: Ami vs Mamoru". Sailor Moon also tries to heal and free Endymion in this episode. She fails, and Sailor Mercury ultimately ends up having to fight Dark Endymion. This episode may be a filler, but it contains significant emotional moments for Usagi, Mamoru, and Ami.
