TOP 10 best Sailor Moon episodes!
While filler episodes often receive a bad reputation in anime, Sailor Moon stands as a rare exception with its genuinely compelling and humorous side-stories.
The original 1990s series features notably long arcs, with the first two seasons spanning over forty episodes each. This length was primarily due to the inclusion of filler that expanded upon the manga's plot. Embracing the spirit of 90s cartoons, the creators infused these episodes with slapstick comedy and heartwarming moral lessons.
For longtime fans, these non-canonical chapters offer the strongest dose of magical girl nostalgia. Far from being "empty" content, many of these episodes provide essential character development and subtle foreshadowing of major events to come.

10/ Usagi sends a love letter to a radio station
Love is the ultimate source of power in Sailor Moon, and the Dark Kingdom frequently attempts to weaponize this emotion. In a particularly devious scheme, Queen Beryl creates a fraudulent radio station designed to harvest energy from listeners who send in sentimental love letters to be read on air.
The episode "Mysterious Sleeping Sickness" reveals a surprisingly tender side of Usagi’s strict teacher, Ms. Haruda, who submits a letter under the pseudonym "Hopeful Haruda." Her story of unrequited love adds a layer of depth to her character. Simultaneously, this chapter marks a turning point for Usagi as she begins to confront her growing feelings for Tuxedo Mask, dreaming of a future where her crush might blossom into true love.
9/ Sailor Mars and Sailor Moon bicker comically
When Rei Hino (Sailor Mars) first joins the Senshi, her pragmatic and serious nature immediately clashes with Usagi’s sensitive, whimsical personality. The episode "Usagi vs. Rei: Nightmare in Dreamland" perfectly encapsulates the hilarious rivalry that would define their friendship.
As Rei begins to develop an interest in Tuxedo Mask, Usagi’s insecurities take center stage. The Dark Kingdom exploits this territorial tension by trapping them in a dream-like realm. Their constant bickering over the mysterious hero provides great comic relief and hints at the brief romantic entanglement Rei and Mamoru share early in the series.
8/ Inner Senshi gets stuck on a cursed cruise ship

In "I Want a Boyfriend: The Luxury Cruise Ship is a Trap," the series ventures into chilling maritime horror. The villainous Thetis targets the romantic desires of single women to drain their energy. While the premise sounds familiar, the execution is unique, blending high-stakes action with eerie visuals.
This episode features a rare use of Usagi's Disguise Pen, as she transforms into a photographer to sneak onto the ship. It’s also a fantastic bonding moment for the Inner Senshi; watching Rei and Ami navigate the ship’s supernatural dangers proves how well their distinct personalities complement each other early on.
7/ Usagi is fooled by a modeling scam
"Usagi's a Model: The Flash of the Monster Camera" may seem lighthearted, but it serves as a wonderful tribute to 90s aesthetics. The Dark Kingdom creates a fake modeling agency to lure ambitious young people—a plot that mirrors real-life scams where fraudulent agents exploit people's aspirations.
The episode is a feast for the eyes, showcasing iconic 90s Japanese street style, including overalls and pastel palettes. Additionally, it features a memorable interaction between Usagi and Mamoru; he drops his usual guard to discuss his own work ethic, even revealing his past experience as a model—a fitting background given his natural elegance.
6/ Usagi and Mamoru finally begin to bond
In the original anime, the romance between Usagi and Mamoru is a slow burn compared to the manga. Their "tsundere" dynamic—constantly teasing and arguing with one another—means their relationship takes time to mature. This makes the breakthrough moments all the more satisfying for the audience.
"The Painting of Love: Usagi and Mamoru Get Closer" is one of the first times they connect as civilians without their masks. While they still bicker, a shared encounter with an artist reveals a deeper connection. Mamoru is drawn to a painting that evokes his forgotten past life, leading the two to pose together and giving fans a glimpse of the destiny that binds them.
5/ Mamoru shows his caring side

When Chibiusa first arrives from the future, Usagi often treats her like a pest or a rival sibling. Because Usagi is still a teenager herself, the transition to a maternal role is difficult. Thankfully, Mamoru steps in to provide a more nurturing presence.
In "Usagi and Mamoru's Babysitting Mayhem," we see Mamoru’s innate patience and fatherly instincts long before he learns of Chibiusa's true identity. Watching him handle children with such grace is a testament to Naoko Takeuchi’s writing, which broke traditional gender molds by portraying a strong male lead who is also deeply compassionate and responsible.
4/ Sailor Mercury finds her match
Ami Mizuno, Sailor Mercury, is a beloved favorite for her sharp intellect and serene aquatic aesthetic. As the "voice of reason" for the group, she rarely finds time for personal distractions. However, "Crushing on Ami: The Boy Who Can See the Future" gives her a well-deserved spotlight.
The episode explores a rare romantic possibility for Ami when she meets Ryo, a student whose grades—and psychic abilities—rival her own. For a character as brilliant as Ami, finding someone who can actually keep up with her intellectually is a rare and heartwarming sight, even if it is just for a single episode.
3/ Poor Chibiusa has fallen on hard times
Chibiusa is often dismissed as being "annoying," but "In Search of the Silver Crystal: Chibiusa's Secret" reminds us that she is just a lonely child carrying a world-ending burden. Stranded in the past and desperate to save her mother, her behavior is a manifestation of her immense stress and isolation.
Her conversations with Luna-P highlight her vulnerability, making her much more relatable to the audience. This filler episode also deepens the mystery of her origins while allowing Mamoru to step into a protective, parental role that solidifies their bond.
2/ Usagi fights jealousy

Adolescence is hard enough without having to save the universe. For Usagi, navigating a new relationship while carrying the weight of a past-life curse creates plenty of insecurity. In "Protect Mamoru: Ninja Usagi's Jealousy," her teenage anxieties are on full display.
When Mamoru temporarily stays at Rei’s shrine, Usagi’s imagination runs wild. Instead of expressing her concerns, she resorts to a hilarious, failed spying mission. While the episode is packed with slapstick humor, it serves as an important growth moment for Usagi, teaching her the value of trust and communication in a relationship.
1/ Sailor Moon tries to help a brainwashed Endymion
Just as Usagi and Mamoru finally embrace their destiny as Serenity and Endymion, tragedy strikes. Queen Beryl kidnaps Mamoru and brainwashes him into "Dark Endymion," forcing him to turn against the woman he loves. This shift brings a profound emotional weight to the series as Usagi grapples with immense grief.
The episode "I Will Run From Love No More: Friend vs. Mamoru" is a standout for its emotional intensity. Usagi desperately tries to reach the man buried beneath the brainwashing, showing her incredible strength of heart. Although she doesn't succeed immediately, the conflict forces the other Senshi to step up, leading to high-stakes confrontations that push their powers to the limit.
