The Fate of the Revolutionary Army in One Piece, Explained!

What is the Revolutionary Army in One Piece?
The Revolutionary Army's mission is to challenge the World Government and represents the ordinary people's aspiration for freedom and equality. The army could help in rebuilding the world after the fall of the World Government or disband if their mission is accomplished. If the army fails in the final battle, Luffy may be needed to complete the mission, which could lead to possible disgrace for the army.

Over the years, the manga/anime One Piece has introduced fans to a remarkable variety of factions and groups, ranging from the Seven Warlords to the Four Emperors, the World Government, and numerous pirate crews. Among these is the Revolutionary Army, which ranks as one of the most powerful and influential factions in the world, despite its limited screen time. This army represents all the oppressed and those crushed under the power, and its members would rather die than submit to the World Government.
Now, One Piece fans know several key members of this group, from Dragon and Sabo to Emporio Ivankov, and with the final saga looming, fans can make informed guesses about the role the army will play once the world's future is decided. This also allows for speculation about the fate of the Revolutionary Army—whether they will succeed in their mission or face a crushing defeat at the hands of the Marines. Luffy could succeed where the army fails, but even so, if Dragon’s coalition is defeated, it would be bad news for all One Piece heroes, and no one wants that fate for them.
What is the Revolutionary Army’s Role So Far?
The Revolutionary Army’s role in One Piece can be described in two ways: within the universe and from a narrative perspective. In-universe, the Revolutionary Army’s mission is to stand against the World Government and, more specifically, against the Celestial Dragons and other nobles who benefit from the cruel and exploitative regime of the World Government. The Revolutionary Army represents the defiance of ordinary people against an unjust world order, an expression of their dissatisfaction and desire for freedom in the face of tyranny. For years, the Revolutionary Army has been gradually chipping away at the power and influence of the World Government across the four seas, with the ultimate goal of completely overthrowing the World Government so that all island nations can govern themselves independently.
From time to time, the Revolutionary Army’s role in the universe is also to support other freedom-oriented groups, primarily the Straw Hat crew led by Dragon’s son, Luffy. While these two groups may not have an official alliance, the Revolutionary Army is willing to ally with and support any kingdom or group that challenges the World Government and/or has suffered under its oppression. One example of this was on Dressrosa Island, where Luffy and Trafalgar Law inspired the people to revolt against Doflamingo, and the Revolutionary Army arrived to provide additional help. It was during this event that Luffy learned his childhood friend Sabo was alive and well. Since then, the Straw Hats and the Revolutionary Army have gone their separate ways once again, but their unspoken alliance remains, and it could play a role again soon.
The Narrative Role of the Revolutionary Army
From a narrative perspective, the Revolutionary Army serves to lay the groundwork for the inevitable final war against the World Government, with the goal of freeing the entire world from its iron grip. It would be too unrealistic to think that Luffy’s crew or even the vast Straw Hat armada could challenge and overthrow the World Government and its elite defenders, such as the Admirals and the Five Elders. Therefore, the story needs the Revolutionary Army to create a plausible narrative for the eventual downfall of the World Government.

Only a resistance movement of this scale could give One Piece fans hope that the World Government could fall, and Luffy could take on a symbolic role in this effort as Joy Boy, the icon of liberation and hope. Luffy may fight for personal freedom, but fans can predict that Luffy will ultimately fight for the freedom of the entire planet in the climax of the final saga, and the story needs the Revolutionary Army to help Luffy and make this final victory feel plausible rather than forced.
What Would Be the Fate of the Revolutionary Army in Case of Success?
The story of One Piece is still ongoing, so the final fate of the Revolutionary Army has not yet been decided. However, One Piece fans can make informed guesses about the future of this organization—both positive and negative. After all, Monkey D. Dragon’s army is fully committed to an all-or-nothing cause against the World Government, and surrender is not an option. This army will either succeed in its historic mission or face total annihilation. Fans can hope that the former option will come to pass. If so, there are a few strong possibilities for what might follow.
The Revolutionary Army began as the Fighters for Freedom, with a name implying that freedom is something valuable to reclaim. Only in an unjust and oppressive world would such a group form, and if the World Government falls, the Revolutionary Army’s mission will change entirely—or they will disband. Assuming the World Government is overthrown and all the islands are liberated, the surviving members of the Monkey family and their friends could travel the world, helping unstable or impoverished nations rebuild their power and thrive in a post-World Government era. This would be a long, drawn-out reconstruction period, taking many years to fully complete. Anime fans have already seen a similar scenario in My Hero Academia, after the fall of the ultimate villains, where professional heroes and UA students work to physically rebuild their nation and restore order. A similar thing could happen with the members of the Revolutionary Army.
Disbanding the Revolutionary Army
Alternatively, the Revolutionary Army could be formally dissolved, allowing its members to scatter across the world, either to help with the rebuilding effort on their own terms or to completely step away from global affairs and enjoy private lives as ordinary citizens. For efficiency’s sake, the Revolutionary Army would remain united so its loyal members can help coordinate the global reconstruction, but in principle, the Revolutionary Army would likely allow anyone to leave if they wished, their primary mission having been achieved. They wouldn’t force anyone to participate in the rebuilding effort. Only volunteers would remain after the Revolutionary Army’s dissolution, working together as friends rather than members of the Army to do what is right for the world.
After all this, the Revolutionary Army’s fate would be to go down in history as the greatest and most noble organization to ever exist—the one that ended centuries of oppression and cruelty at the hands of the World Government. People might even say the Revolutionary Army inherited the thirst for freedom from the mysterious Void Century, the historical phase where the original Joy Boy fought in vain to protect global peace after the rise of the nascent World Government. It’s possible that history books will place Monkey D. Dragon in the same category as all the different versions of Joy Boy, and officers like Sabo would receive honorable mentions. This would be the most glorious and inspiring fate for the Revolutionary Army as the world enters its era of reconstruction.

What would happen to the Revolutionary Army if it failed?
In the events of One Piece’s final saga, it’s also possible that the Revolutionary Army could launch their much-anticipated assault on the World Government and fail. Although the Revolutionary Army plays a significant role in the story, they have limited protection in the grand scheme, and to heighten the tension and stakes to epic proportions, it might be fitting for the Revolutionary Army to fail in their final battle—even if fans are fully behind them. The Revolutionary Army is stronger and larger than ever, but the World Government is simply too powerful, with its vast navy, formidable Admirals, and the Five Elders—powerful figures with awakened Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruits, all holding immense strength.
If the Revolutionary Army fails in its mission, rather than Luffy supporting the army, the army would need Luffy to support them and finish the mission they started. In such a case, the fate of the Revolutionary Army would be disgrace, though they could still preserve some of their noble image through their undeniable intentions. In such a scenario, the Revolutionary Army’s members would likely be captured by the Admirals and the Five Elders, and the leaders would probably face public execution to serve as an example, with Monkey D. Dragon being a likely candidate for the executioner’s axe.
If Gol D. Roger could be publicly decapitated to send a warning to all pirates, the same fate could very well happen to Dragon to deter any future revolt from the Fighters for Freedom. The other members of the Revolutionary Army, meanwhile, would likely end up in the feared prison of Impel Down with no hope of escape—or at least, the officers would. The ordinary members would find themselves in various more conventional detention centers.
In such a case, Luffy would have to push himself to his absolute limit to lead the assault and finish what the Revolutionary Army started, overthrowing the World Government with the power of Gear 5 and his symbolic status as Joy Boy—the one chosen by the sun god, Nika. Assuming Luffy can finish the job, the remaining members of the Revolutionary Army would be freed and begin the rebuilding efforts, much like if they had succeeded, but perhaps more humbly, and with some leaders already dead. Still, those are the risks that Sabo and the others have accepted. No matter what happens at the end of One Piece, they are ready for the fate that awaits the Revolutionary Army—whether glorious or humiliating.
