Taki Tachibana
Taki Tachibana is the male protagonist of the hit film Your Name (Kimi no Na wa). A 17-year-old high school student living in the heart of Tokyo, Taki leads a fast-paced life, balancing his studies with a part-time job at an Italian restaurant and a passion for architecture. His world is turned upside down when he begins mysteriously switching bodies in his dreams with Mitsuha Miyamizu, a high school girl from a rural town who longingly wished for a life as a handsome boy in the city.

Appearance
Taki is a handsome young man of average height and athletic build. He has spiky brown hair that reaches the nape of his neck, with bangs framing his forehead, and expressive dark blue eyes. Due to his impulsive and protective nature, he is occasionally seen sporting small bandages from scuffles.
At the start of the film, Taki is introduced in casual wear: a plain white t-shirt and blue shorts, often with a bandage on his left cheek. His standard school uniform is sharp and traditional, consisting of a white shirt, a green striped tie, a dark blue blazer, dark gray trousers, and black loafers.
While on duty at his part-time job, he dons a professional waiter's attire: a black vest over a long-sleeved white shirt, a black bow tie, and a long black apron. For his date with Miki Okudera, he opted for a more stylish look with a dark jacket over an orange, blue, and white striped V-neck. Most notably, he often wears a braided orange cord on his right wrist—a gift from Mitsuha that he keeps as a precious good luck charm.
Flashbacks to his 14-year-old self show a shorter, slighter Taki in his middle school uniform—a pale yellow blazer over a white shirt and green tie. As an adult, he matures into a tall man with broad shoulders, typically seen in a professional black suit and blue tie, a transformation noted by his high school friends.

Personality
Taki is a kind-hearted, hardworking, and deeply responsible individual. While he is generally organized and balanced, his artistic temperament and fascination with architecture reveal a more sensitive side. He is quick to anger but equally quick to act in defense of others. His persistence is one of his strongest traits; when faced with the impossible, he refuses to back down.
He can be short-tempered and blunt, often blurting out his thoughts without a filter when stressed. However, he is self-aware enough to immediately try and correct himself. This assertiveness actually helps Mitsuha during their body-swaps, as Taki’s direct nature gives her the confidence to stand up to her father and the social pressures of her small town.
Though he starts as a somewhat typical teenager—occasionally getting overwhelmed by the biological surprises of inhabiting Mitsuha's body—he matures into a deeply devoted soul. His charisma is evident as he inadvertently makes Mitsuha more popular at her school. Despite his outgoing nature, he is initially quite clumsy in romance, struggling to understand his own heart until his bond with Mitsuha becomes undeniable.
As an adult, Taki carries a quiet melancholy. He feels a constant, unexplainable urge to find "someone" or "something" precious that he has lost. This drive fuels his career in architecture, where he hopes to design landscapes that provide comfort and withstand the test of time, ensuring that what happened to Itomori is never forgotten.
The Legend of the Red String
Taki lives in a Tokyo apartment with his father. According to director Makoto Shinkai, Taki’s parents divorced before the events of the film, which perhaps contributes to his independent and self-sufficient nature.

The Itomori Connection
In 2013, a 14-year-old Taki briefly encountered Mitsuha on a Tokyo train. At that point, the body-switching had not yet begun for him, and he did not recognize the girl who approached him with tears in her eyes. When she handed him her braided cord before disappearing into the crowd, he kept it, unknowingly carrying their connection for three years until the phenomenon finally triggered for him.
Their journey is a race against time and memory. Even after discovering the tragic fate of Itomori, Taki's determination leads him to the Miyamizu shrine to drink the kuchikamizake, successfully reversing time to save the town and the girl he loves. Their meeting at Kataware-doki (the twilight hour) remains one of the most iconic moments in anime history, as they finally confess their mutual feelings across the boundaries of time.
Legacy and Weathering With You
Taki also makes a cameo in Weathering With You (Tenki no Ko), set in 2021. He is seen helping his grandmother with a ceremony, appearing before his final reunion with Mitsuha. Shinkai later confirmed in interviews that despite the memory loss and the trials they faced, Taki and Mitsuha eventually find each other again and marry by the year 2024, proving that the red string of fate can never be truly broken.
