Shiryu

Shiryu

Shiryu, or Shiliew "of the Rain," was the Chief Warden of Impel Down prison until he was imprisoned by Magellan for his excessive violence towards prisoners. During the riot caused by Monkey D. Luffy and Marshall D. Teach, he decided to join their crew.

After the time skip, he became the commander of the 2nd Fleet of the Blackbeard Pirates.

Appearance

In a flashback, Shiryu appeared to have wings with a demonic appearance, similar to Magellan, but they were absent when Shiryu made his first appearance. He is also seen wearing an officer’s hat with ear flaps and brown gloves. He usually keeps the brim of his hat very low. He seems to be the same height as Teach (3.44m) and is taller than most of the guards in Impel Down. He also has a prominent chin.

He was allowed to keep his uniform rather than wear the standard striped prisoner’s uniform. He is also dressed in a long coat over his uniform, holding it like a cape. The kanji on the back of his jacket is written as Goku (獄, Goku), which means "prison". Shiryu is usually seen smoking a cigar. The sword Shiryu carries is a Nodachi. It is long and has a square guard. Its sheath is black and white at the end.

After the time skip, Shiryu’s attire is almost the same, except his coat is black, and all the Impel Down symbols on his hat, collar, and belt have been replaced with skulls.

Personality

Discover our  Nico Robin POP Figure

Shiryu is a true sociopath; he is extremely cruel and appears to feel no fear. He seems to enjoy killing people whenever he can. He has massacred many prisoners within the walls of Impel Down. He also killed his subordinates immediately after being released from his cell, while sarcastically apologizing. He enjoys testing his blade against others, even if they are far beneath his level of power. He is very calm and possesses an unshakeable composure, even in tense and unexpected situations. He is also cautious, as he warns Blackbeard's crew not to underestimate Magellan and advises them to prepare adequately for the New World. Shiryu is apparently very cunning and treacherous. When Magellan freed him to help fight, Shiryu immediately betrayed him by killing several of his subordinates.

He is also a smoker. When he was released from prison to help Magellan, the first thing he asked for was a lighter to light his cigar.

Shiryu also believes that the Seven Warlords are merely pirates. Despite this, he helped the Blackbeard Pirates and even joined their crew. He believes in destiny, assuming that it led him to Blackbeard and told him to join his crew. He has shown that he cares very little about personal matters. When Admiral Sengoku asked him what happened to Magellan, he simply told him to find the answer himself. He seems to have a very strict disposition toward those around him, whether they are guards or pirates. He also became very irritated when his crew was not ready to go to the New World.

Past

He was co-director of Impel Down under the orders of Magellan, but after massacring many prisoners, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death. In the past, his power made him Magellan's equal.

Impel Down Arc

It was decided by Magellan that he should be released to stop Luffy's riot, but he betrayed Impel Down by killing the guards sent to free him. He crosses paths with Blackbeard and his crew on Level 4, after their defeat by the director, and provides them with the antidote that saves them from certain death. He allows them to escape the prison and warns them not to underestimate Magellan. He later joins their crew.

Marineford Arc

Shiryu is seen with Blackbeard's crew on a wall, observing his captain fighting Whitebeard. He then participates in the murder of Whitebeard after Teach orders his crew to kill him. After Blackbeard steals the Gura Gura no Mi, Shiryu is caught in the shockwave from Sengoku in his Buddha form.

Post-Marineford Arc

He is seen with the rest of the crew in the New World. They battle Jewelry Bonney’s crew, intending to sell her to the Marines in exchange for a ship. However, upon seeing Akainu on the ship, he and his crew quickly leave, leaving Bonney behind.

Time Skip

During the time skip, the crew entered the New World and conquered former territories of Whitebeard with their captain’s knowledge. Now that their captain has become one of the Four Emperors, the crew hunts Devil Fruit users to kill them and take their powers. Teach, having divided the crew into ten fleets, has assigned Shiryu as the Commander of the 2nd Fleet. The Blackbeard Pirates achieved a significant victory over the former Whitebeard Pirates during a war known as the "Revenge War." Apparently, this war partially helped establish the captain of the Blackbeard Pirates as an Emperor.

Zou Arc

Shiryu reappears somewhere at sea in the New World, accompanied by Laffitte on one of the two Blackbeard Pirates’ raft-vessels. As Burgess contacts Laffitte via an Escargophone, Shiryu is amused by the fact that his comrade is still alive. When Burgess mentions his current situation, Shiryu eagerly wants to know where he is, to which the "Champion" responds that he is right in front of the Revolutionary Army's headquarters.

Whole Cake Island Arc

It is revealed in the newspaper that the Blackbeard Pirates have destroyed the Revolutionary Army’s headquarters, Baltigo. Following this, they managed to escape from the Marines and Cipher Pol after a brief altercation. However, there is currently no further information about the events of this operation.

Reverie Arc

After the events in the Totto Land Archipelago, Shiryu is seen alongside Blackbeard as he reads the newspaper reporting the recent happenings involving Monkey D. Luffy.

Wano Kuni Arc

He is seen attacking Moria alongside Catarina Devon, using his Devil Fruit powers. It is revealed that both of them have eaten a Devil Fruit—Shiryu the Suke Suke no Mi, and Devon the Inu Inu no Mi, Model Kyubi no Kitsune.

Egg Head Island Arc

A few weeks after Blackbeard kidnaps Koby and takes him to Hachinosu, riots break out on the island. Koby manages to escape from prison with the help of Perona. Several other prisoners escape with him, whom Koby does not want to leave behind. Pizarro, who notices the incident with his Devil Fruit powers, chooses not to intervene to avoid damaging the town. When Vasco Shot suggests they simply burn it down to prevent the escape, Pizarro angrily scolds him, saying that Blackbeard would surely be furious about it. Moreover, the Rocky Port had just been repaired. Shortly after, the island is suddenly attacked by the Marines. The Blackbeard Pirates are forced to watch as a Marine ship falls from the sky onto the island, where Vice-Admiral Garp launches a devastating attack that destroys the town.
