Serpico
Serpico is a central figure in the series. Born as the illegitimate son and servant of the noble Vandimion family, he eventually joined Guts’ traveling company alongside his half-sister, Farnese.

Character & Personality
Despite a harrowing upbringing, Serpico is defined by his impeccable manners, gentlemanly conduct, and quiet sincerity. He is fiercely protective of Farnese, his half-sister, catering to her every whim and viewing her as a "guardian angel" for rescuing him from a life of destitution. Although their past was marked by Farnese's erratic behavior toward him, her safety remains his absolute priority. Initially, Serpico harbored a deep distrust of Guts, fearing the Black Swordsman’s inner darkness would lead Farnese to her doom. However, after traveling with the group toward Elfhelm, he has come to trust Guts and his companions, finding kinship in their shared struggles. His bond with Farnese has matured significantly through their adventures and the introduction of Roderick into their lives.

Serpico learned early in life that "revenge only breeds more revenge," leading him to avoid conflict whenever possible. Even when Farnese forced him into duels with nobles to defend her honor, he would deliberately fight to a draw—despite his superior skill—to avoid bruising their egos and inviting further retaliation. He masks his true emotions and sharp intellect behind a calculated facade of naivety and incompetence.
When he drops this act, Serpico reveals a cold, cautious, and highly analytical side. He has threatened Guts multiple times in the past, justifying questionable moral choices as necessary means to protect those he holds dear.
Curiously, despite his lethal capabilities, Serpico is deeply unsettled by the sight of blood and terrified of fire. This phobia is rooted in a traumatic memory: Farnese once forced him to personally ignite his mother’s execution pyre to "prove" they were not the children of a heretic.

Abilities & Skills
Martial Prowess
Serpico is a master fencer, arguably the only one in the party whose technique rivals Guts'. Farnese once noted that he could defeat noble swordsmen with one hand tied behind his back. While he may not appear threatening at first glance, his precision is undeniable—such as when he used a thrown branch to intercept a bolt mid-air to pin Guts down. Knowing he cannot match Guts’ raw power in a direct clash, Serpico uses the environment and tactical advantages to level the playing field. His combat potential was vastly augmented by his Sylph equipment, which grants him near-superhuman agility. Guts himself remarked that fighting Serpico was more difficult than facing the Apostle-like Great Goat. Beyond the battlefield, Serpico is also an accomplished cook, providing much-needed comfort to the group through his meals.
Strategic Intelligence
Serpico utilizes his unassuming demeanor to bait enemies into underestimating him. He is a cunning strategist who thinks several steps ahead. During his clashes with Guts, he successfully navigated lethal encounters by exploiting Guts’ inability to draw his massive sword in tight spaces and using Guts' own equipment, like miniature bombs, to facilitate a swift escape.
Magical Equipment
- Rapier: His primary weapon for years. As Farnese's personal bodyguard, he honed his fencing to a lethal degree. He continues to carry it even alongside his enchanted blades.
- Sylph Sword: A gift from Schierke, this blade harnesses air pressure to slice through Trolls and Daka with ease. It allows Serpico to strike multiple foes simultaneously using wind currents. However, its power has limits; even under a full moon, it struggled to pierce the hide of a massive Sea God tentacle.
- Sylph Cloak: Also granted by Schierke, this cloak makes his body light and buoyant, allowing for incredible leaps and aerial maneuverability that mimics flight. It can generate gusts strong enough to deflect projectiles and attacks. Together with the sword, it creates a wind barrier capable of dispersing magical lightning. The Sylphs within these items share a strong bond with Serpico, as seen when they eagerly "leapt" back to him under their own power.
Backstory
The secret child of Federico Vandimion and a servant, Serpico spent his youth caring for his ailing mother in extreme poverty. While he fought other children for scraps of food, his mother constantly reminded him of his noble heritage, showing him a locket of his father as proof. At age ten, Farnese found him half-frozen in the snow and claimed him as her "property." From then on, Serpico’s life belonged to her; she subjected him to dangerous whims and cruel games. However, a deeper bond formed in the palace woods, where they found solace in each other’s company. Years later, Federico Vandimion privately acknowledged his paternity but refused to publicly recognize Serpico, instead offering him noble status in exchange for his silence and his lifelong protection of Farnese. For years, he served as her dance partner and silent guardian, often engaging in duels with slighted nobles while visiting his mother, whose mind had deteriorated to the point of no longer recognizing him.

Their lives shifted when Federico attempted to force Farnese into a political marriage. Distraught, Farnese offered to elope with Serpico, but he refused, knowing the complexities of their bond. In a fit of rage and despair, Farnese burned the family mansion to the ground. Serpico saved her from the collapsing structure, leading Federico to annul the marriage and send them both to a convent. There, Farnese was named Captain of the Holy Iron Chain Knights—a ceremonial role reserved for women—and Serpico followed as her Herald. They served under Azan, carrying out the church's grim task of burning "heretics." Though Serpico pitied the victims, his devotion to Farnese superseded his conscience. This loyalty reached its ultimate test when his own mother was condemned to the stake, and Farnese forced him to light the fire himself to prove his allegiance.
