Sagara Sanosuke

Sagara Sanosuke, born Higashidani Sanosuke, is a main character in the Rurouni Kenshin series. A disgraced former member of the Sekihō Army, Sanosuke spent the years following the Meiji Revolution venting his frustrations as a "fight merchant" under the name Zanza. He harbored a deep hatred for the Ishin Shishi, who framed and murdered his comrades, as well as the flawed Meiji government they created. However, after meeting Kenshin, Sano is able to put his resentment aside and join Kenshin's group at the Kamiya Dōjō. With his immense strength and upright character, Sanosuke becomes an invaluable ally, serving as a trusted friend and a reliable "right-hand man" in battle.

Appearance
Tall and lean, Sanosuke's slight build belies his immense strength and superhuman tenacity. His wild shock of spiky brown hair and intense brown eyes are clear indicators of his fiery demeanor. Sano is almost always seen wearing a white happi jacket with black trim, featuring the kanji character aku (惡) — meaning "evil" or "bad" — emblazoned on his back. He typically wears his jacket open, often leaving his arms out of the sleeves so it drapes over his shoulders. He wears white dōgi pants and keeps his chest bare, save for the white sarashi bandage tape wrapped around his abdomen, ankles, and feet. Additionally, Sano wears a long headband and matching sarashi around his left forearm, usually depicted in red or purple. Because he fights with his fists and relies on absorbing damage, he is frequently seen in bandages, particularly around his right hand after mastering the Futae no Kiwami.
After leaving Japan for the mainland at the end of the series, Sanosuke allows his hair to grow into a shoulder-length mane and grows a chinstrap beard, giving him an even wilder appearance.
Personality
Simple and impetuous, Sanosuke possesses a complex moral code despite his straightforward demeanor. He isn't concerned with traditional labels of "good" or "bad"; instead, he values honesty above all else. His traumatic experience with the Sekihō Army taught him that definitions of right and wrong are often subjective and altered by those in power. While he can be sarcastically jovial, those close to him describe his temper as a smoldering fire that flares up when he sees injustice. He prefers to speak with his fists and finds no greater joy than fighting a powerful opponent.
Under Kenshin's influence, Sanosuke begins to find a deeper purpose. He renounces his purely violent nature and joins Kenshin's mission to protect the downtrodden. However, he remains notoriously stubborn and is a bit of a "mooch," often wandering into the Kamiya Dojo for free meals and racking up large tabs at the Akabeko restaurant without any intention of paying them back.

Relationships
- Sagara Sōzō - Sano's childhood mentor and hero. The Sekihō Army captain treated Sano like a brother. When the government executed Sōzō to cover their own lies, Sano's innocence died. He took the "Sagara" name in his honor.
- Himura Kenshin - Initially a target of Sano's resentment, Kenshin earned his respect through his selfless strength. Sano views Kenshin's ideals as a continuation of his mentor's dreams and is willing to follow him to the end, even if it means death.
- Tsukioka Katsuhiro (Tsunan) - A former comrade from the Sekihō Army. Now an ukiyo-e artist and explosives expert, he provides Sano with the bombs used to destroy Shishio's battleship, the Rengoku.
- Yūkyūzan Anji - A fallen monk who taught Sanosuke the Futae no Kiwami. Despite being enemies during the Kyoto arc, Sano deeply respects Anji’s strength and spent their fight trying to save Anji from his own inner darkness.
Myōjin Yahiko - They share a brotherly relationship filled with teasing and mischief. Sano often gives Yahiko guidance on what it means to be a man.
Kamiya Kaoru - Sano treats Kaoru like a sister, often playing pranks on her but standing ready to defend her at any cost.
Takani Megumi - Though he initially despised her for her role in opium production, he eventually became one of her staunchest protectors.
Saitō Hajime - A relationship defined by mutual animosity and quiet respect. Saitō views Sano as a "dim-witted amateur," which drove Sano to seek greater strength in Kyoto.
Capabilities
Sanosuke possesses almost superhuman strength and Herculean tenacity. He can shatter rocks with his bare hands and was originally known for wielding the Zanbatō, a massive horse-slaying sword. His real advantage, however, is his ability to absorb damage that would kill an ordinary man. He has little concept of self-defense, preferring to take a hit to land a more powerful one.
Futae no Kiwami
After being defeated by Saitō, Sanosuke learned the Futae no Kiwami ("Mastery of the Two Layers") from Anji. This technique involves a double strike delivered in 1/75th of a second. The first strike negates the object's natural resistance, and the second strike shatters it completely before it can recover. He eventually developed a "Three Layer" version to defeat Anji himself.
History and Creation
Sanosuke was created by Nobuhiro Watsuki to be Kenshin's best friend—someone who isn't afraid to punch Kenshin to "wake him up" from his sadness. His design was partially inspired by the character Lamp from Mashin Bōken Tan Lamp-Lamp. Sanosuke has consistently been one of the most popular characters in the franchise, often ranking second in popularity polls.
In the Live Action Movie
In the live-action films, Sanosuke is portrayed as a rowdy brawler who challenges Kenshin in prison. He helps rescue Megumi from Takeda Kanryū and engages in a memorable, chaotic fight against Inui Banjin. Unlike the manga, his introduction emphasizes his raw energy and comedic rivalry with Kenshin.
