Rin Okumura
Rin Okumura is the central protagonist of Blue Exorcist. Along with his younger twin brother, Yukio, he was born to Yuri Egin and the demon lord Satan. Currently a student at the True Cross Academy, Rin is training to become an Exorcist. His ultimate ambition is to achieve the rank of Knight and defeat his biological father.

Appearance
In his demonic form, Rin manifests two blue flames above his head like horns, along with elongated elven ears. His eyes glow a brilliant blue with distorted red pupils, and his body becomes wreathed in blue flames, with a concentration of fire at the tip of his black tail.
Prior to joining the academy, Rin's rebellious nature was reflected in his attire: a blue hoodie over a pink t-shirt, paired with black pants adorned with chains. He often wore a multi-pocketed white jacket and black mittens. Frequent street fights meant he was often seen with bandages on his cheeks and hands, usually applied by Yukio.
As a student of True Cross Academy, he wears the standard uniform: a white shirt, a red, black, and white tie, and a black suit jacket and trousers. Rin carries the Kurikara over his shoulder in a red sleeve with black ties. During class, he often uses a small clip to pin back his bangs so they don't interfere with his work.
Personality
Rin is a protective and fiercely supportive individual. While he can be violent and prone to fighting—likely an influence of his demonic blood—he possesses a genuinely kind heart. He constantly encourages his friends and strives to be their pillar of support. He is particularly protective of Yukio and dreams of surpassing him, though his brother often views him as impulsive or dim-witted. This dynamic makes it difficult for Rin to be taken seriously, leading to a desperate desire for Yukio’s approval.
Rin harbored a deep love for his adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto, and speaks of him with great reverence. His greatest regret is that their last interaction was a heated argument just before Shiro's death. He is quick to defend Fujimoto’s honor, becoming enraged if anyone insults his memory. Despite his hot-headed reputation, Rin is surprisingly level-headed and rarely loses his temper without significant provocation.
He possesses a natural empathy, easily connecting with the grief of others, such as Shiemi Moriyama’s loss of her grandmother or Ryuji Suguro’s drive to defeat Satan. Having grown up isolated and bullied as a "demon child," he deeply understands the desire for friendship. While he isn't academically gifted, his emotional intelligence and cooking skills are top-tier. His peers eventually come to accept him during the Kyoto Arc, realizing that despite his terrifying heritage, he is a loyal and sensitive soul who even cries over moving manga.
Past
During the "Blue Night," Satan slaughtered many exorcists while seeking a suitable vessel to save Yuri Egin. Shiro Fujimoto and Mephisto Pheles discovered Yuri in the forest with her newborn twins, Rin and Yukio. She passed away shortly after birth. Mephisto made a wager with Shiro: rather than killing the children, they would seal Rin’s demonic flames within the Kurikara sword and raise the boys as normal humans. If Rin's nature ever resurfaced, Mephisto would take custody.
Rin grew up unaware of his origin, though his unnatural strength often led others to fear him. He was the constant protector of his brother, Yukio, shielding him from bullies and encouraging him to become a doctor. It was during these years that he discovered his natural talent for cooking, which became one of his few peaceful hobbies.
History in the Anime
Rin’s journey begins when he defends a pigeon from being tortured by a gang of delinquents led by Reiji Shiratori. Shortly after being fired from his job, Rin begins seeing "Coaltars"—small demons invisible to normal humans. When Shiratori is possessed by the demon Astaroth and attacks him, Rin’s blue flames erupt, revealing his true nature as the son of Satan.
Following the tragic death of Shiro Fujimoto, who sacrificed himself to protect Rin from Satan’s possession, Rin draws the Kurikara. By doing so, he permanently releases his demonic power, gaining fangs, pointed ears, and a tail. At Shiro's funeral, he meets Mephisto Pheles. When given the choice to die or run, Rin declares his intent to become an Exorcist and kill Satan to avenge his father. Amused by the irony, Mephisto enrolls him in True Cross Academy.

Rin is currently an Exwire at the True Cross Academy, specializing as a Knight. He fights using the Kurikara, which acts as a portal for his demonic power. He is accompanied by Kuro, a Cat Sith familiar that once belonged to Shiro Fujimoto. Kuro serves as both a loyal companion and a powerful mount in battle.
- Pyrokinesis: Rin can generate and manipulate the deadly blue flames of Satan. While powerful, he must train hard to control them so they don't consume him.
- Regeneration: His demonic blood allows him to heal from serious wounds rapidly and makes him immune to most demonic miasmas.
