Puck
Puck is an elf and the very first companion Guts encounters on his journey. Interestingly, he is a manga-exclusive character in the early parts of the story, as he did not appear in the original 1997 animated series.
From the opening chapter of Berserk, Puck establishes himself as a playful and boastful personality. His narrative role is vital: he describes and questions the world around him, providing a much-needed sense of lightheartedness through his innocence—a stark contrast to Guts' dark and heavy persona.

Description
As an elf, Puck is a mystical being descended from Wind Spirits. He hails from the Astral World, which renders his kind invisible to most ordinary mortals.
He possesses the appearance of a small, nude boy with elongated ears and delicate dragonfly wings. His azure-blue hair, which pales to white at the roots, features a signature spike at the top.
Despite his androgynous looks and occasionally effeminate mannerisms, Puck is explicitly identified as male.

The author frequently portrays Puck in a caricatured style. In this role, he serves as the primary comic relief, often breaking the fourth wall or making pop culture references to lighten the mood during the manga's most grim or violent moments.
Appearance
Puck resembles a miniature human. He has sharp, pointed ears and translucent insect-like wings on his back. His eyes and hair share the same azure hue, with his hair flaring out in multiple directions. He is often seen carrying a burdock, which he treats as his signature "weapon."
While he began with slightly exaggerated features, Puck eventually evolved into a standardized "chestnut" chibi form during comedic scenes. In this state, his body becomes round and stocky, his limbs shorten, and his eyes are rendered as simple horizontal lines.
Personality
Puck is a whimsical and lighthearted soul who serves as the perfect foil to the sullen and cynical Guts. Rather than judging people by their outward behavior, Puck chooses to look for the inherent goodness within them. This empathy allows him to remain incredibly patient, even when faced with Guts' early cycles of verbal and physical hostility. While he has walked away from the Black Swordsman multiple times in disgust over Guts' cruelty, his belief in Guts' underlying morality always brings him back.

Puck can be quite stubborn, especially when he claims "Becchi" (the Beherit) as his own, even using it as bait for fishing. He takes a mentor-like role with the young thief Isidro, attempting to teach him the "Elf Dimension Style" of combat, though their partnership is mostly comedic. He also maintains a prickly rivalry with fellow elf Ivalera, whose serious nature clashes with Puck's bubbly personality.
While he is often the comic relief, Puck is deeply serious when it matters. He sympathizes with innocent souls like Jill and frequently castigates Guts for his lack of humanity during the earlier arcs. As Guts slowly begins to trust others again, Puck's role shifts from a moral conscience back to a source of levity for the group.
Capabilities
Puck possesses several unique abilities inherent to the elven race:
- Flight: His primary method of travel. Given his small stature, he relies on his wings to keep pace with Guts, often resting in Guts' saddlebag where he has fashioned a tiny home.
- Empathy: Puck can sense the emotions of those around him. This is a visceral experience for him; he feels physical pain when surrounded by negative emotions but feels a sense of ease in the presence of positive thoughts.
- Elf Dust: Perhaps his most valuable trait, the dust from Puck's wings has incredible healing properties. It can close wounds and numb pain almost instantly, which is the main reason Guts originally allowed Puck to stay.

Puck Spark: He can emit a brilliant flash of light. This "Puck Spark" serves as a powerful diversion, blinding enemies and even proving fatal to smaller demonic entities.

History
Originally a resident of the elven kingdom of Elfhelm, Puck left his home by accident. After a dispute with a seagull over a fish, he fell asleep on the bird's back and ended up stranded on the mainland. He joined a traveling troupe of performers and met Rickert along the Midland frontier. After the troupe was eventually massacred, Puck was captured by the Snake Baron’s bandits in the village of Koka, where he was used as target practice until he was eventually rescued by Guts.
