One Piece: Inside Gol D. Roger’s Crew
Share
The Roger Pirates were the legendary crew led by the late Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. They hold the unparalleled distinction of being the only crew to reach Laugh Tale, the final island at the end of the New World. Throughout their journey, they engaged in legendary clashes with Marine Hero Monkey D. Garp and stood as the primary rivals to the formidable Whitebeard Pirates.
Sailing aboard the Oro Jackson—a masterpiece crafted by the legendary shipwright Tom—the crew traversed the entirety of the Grand Line, including the sky island of Skypiea. Today, their exploits are the stuff of myth, and their captain remains the most iconic figure in the history of piracy.

While Gol D. Roger’s name is etched into history, many of his crew members have slipped into obscurity, save for those who remained influential players on the world stage, like Red-Haired Shanks. The crew was first mentioned by Buggy the Clown, who recalled his days as an apprentice alongside Shanks. Notably, Captain Roger is the very first character introduced in the series.
A Legacy of Conquest
The Roger Pirates were formed over 52 years ago when a young Roger invited Silvers Rayleigh to "turn the world upside down." Their voyage led them across the Grand Line, and 39 years ago, they reached Lodestar Island—the final destination indicated by the Log Pose. Realizing another hidden island existed, Roger famously stole the Road Poneglyph text from Charlotte Linlin. A year later, Roger famously allied with Monkey D. Garp to dismantle the Rocks Pirates and their captain, Rocks D. Xebec, during the God Valley Incident.

The Final Voyage
Roger’s final journey cemented his status as a legend. Diagnosed with a terminal illness, Roger determined to conquer the Grand Line in the few years he had left. He recruited the doctor Crocus at Reverse Mountain to keep him stable for this final push. Along the way, they faced their greatest rivals: Vice Admiral Garp, Whitebeard, and Shiki the Golden Lion. Twenty-seven years ago, Roger famously rejected Shiki’s offer of a global alliance, leading to the massive Battle of Edd War.
The crew's dynamic shifted 26 years ago when Kozuki Oden, alongside his family and retainers Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, transferred from Whitebeard’s ship to Roger’s. Their path took them to the heights of Skypiea and through landmarks like Water Seven, Sabaody, and Fish-Man Island, where Roger reunited with King Neptune. After a brief stop in Wano to secure a Poneglyph, the crew finally calculated the coordinates for the hidden island. Upon reaching Laugh Tale and discovering Joy Boy’s treasure, the entire crew erupted into laughter—giving the island its name.

Though they lacked a traditional archaeologist, Roger used his ability to hear the "Voice of All Things" to locate the Poneglyphs. Combined with Oden’s ability to read the ancient script, they uncovered the world's true history. However, believing it was not yet time for the world to know the truth, they kept the secret to themselves. This achievement earned Roger the title "King of the Pirates." Shortly after, Roger disbanded the crew, being the first to depart amidst the tears of his comrades.
Dissolution and Death
Faced with his looming death, Roger surrendered to the Marines a year after the crew’s dissolution. He intended to turn his execution into a catalyst for change. On the scaffold in Loguetown, Roger’s final words sparked the Great Pirate Era, inspiring thousands to take to the seas. As Rayleigh recalled, the crew celebrated their captain’s life that day with more laughter and drink than ever before.

Unmatched Strength
The Roger Pirates are widely considered the most powerful crew to have ever sailed. Even in old age, Silvers Rayleigh was capable of holding off Admiral Kizaru. Shanks has risen to become one of the most respected and feared pirates in the New World. Their collective power was so great that the World Government still considers any former member a top-priority threat. The crew was uniquely stacked with Haki masters, including at least four known users of Conqueror's Haki—more than any other known crew in history.

The Oro Jackson
The Oro Jackson remains the only ship to have fully conquered the Grand Line. Built by the master shipwright Tom from the rare Treasure Tree Adam, it was designed to withstand the most brutal seas in the world. Tom was eventually executed by the World Government for the "crime" of building this ship. Its spiritual successor, the Thousand Sunny, was built by Tom’s apprentice Franky using the same legendary wood.
Trivia
