Kurapika

Kurapika

Kurapika is one of the four main protagonists of the Hunter × Hunter series, but also the sole survivor of the Kuruta clan.

He seeks revenge for his bloody past, and his eyes shine with a beautiful and coveted scarlet red when he experiences intense emotion.

He is the leader of the organisation founded by Right Nostrad, as well as a Blacklist Hunter and a member of the Zodiacs with the codename "Rat". Moreover, he is part of the Intelligence Division, created in preparation for the journey to the Dark Continent.

Appearance

Kurapika has blonde hair with brown eyes (blue in the 1999 series). In his first appearance in the series, he wears a blue armband adorned with a red and white trim all over his body, with a costume underneath. He changes his tabard costume for the duration of the York Shin City arc. His shoes belong to a Chinese style.

Kurapika also wears a single earring, adorned with a ruby in his left ear. After learning Nen, he begins to wear black contact lenses to hide his scarlet eyes.

Personality

Kurapika is portrayed as an intelligent individual with vast knowledge. He is reserved, does not easily open up to others, and tends to make judgments. His distance from others allows him to maintain his composure and morality, but his heart has been poisoned by sadness and hatred. Having been traumatised by the loss of everyone he loved at the age of twelve, Kurapika closes his heart to new people and remains introverted in order to stay focused on his goal. He quickly becomes friends with Gon, Leorio, and Killua.

Although Kurapika openly declares that he wishes to become a Blacklist Hunter and that his ultimate goal is to capture the band of thieves who massacred his family, his fury allows him to compromise his personal morality and delve into the sordid side of society. He is prone to uncontrollable fits of rage if his clan’s memory is insulted in any way.

Kurapika chains

After becoming a professional Hunter, Kurapika embarks on a dark and self-destructive path. His anger leads him to commit wicked acts of rage as a catharsis for his pain. Kurapika's reserved behaviour also makes him very ruthless and unreasonable, but his friends are the only ones able to calm his anger enough for him to think rationally. Despite this, he sees his friendships as a weakness that prevents him from achieving his goals and purpose.

History

Kurapika is a member of the Kurta clan. As a child, Kurapika almost fell off a cliff were it not for the intervention of his best friend, Pairo. Although he was unharmed, his friend Pairo was injured in both legs and eyes, and his condition worsens every day. This incident deeply affects Kurapika, who feels guilty. Believing it was his fault, he decides to resolve the situation by going into the outside world and bringing back the best doctor to heal Pairo. Kurapika then approached the elder of the Kurta clan to request permission to go to the outside world, but he was repeatedly refused and argued with the elder, deeming the Kurta clan's fear of the outside world as unreasonable and backward. After this dispute, he spoke with Pairo, and they had a conversation about the "mysterious" world, which gave Kurapika some clues and insights.

At one point, Kurapika and Pairo saved a stranger called Shilah, and as a token of gratitude, she gave them a book about the adventures of a professional Hunter in the outside world, which they read together and cherished. After the young stranger left, Kurapika realised that the elder of the Kurta clan had stolen it and confronted him about it. Following another argument, the clan elder finally allowed Kurapika to take the test to go to the outside world. After studying hard and passing all the tests successfully, the elder gave him a final test: to go shopping in the outside world with a partner without revealing their scarlet eyes. Kurapika chose Pairo as his partner, much to everyone’s surprise. After departing for the outside world to complete the final test, Pairo eventually fell asleep during the journey to the city, and Kurapika decided in his heart that he would pass the test, find a doctor who could heal Pairo, and afterwards, they would explore the outside world together.

Kurapika passed the final test with some difficulties, but he earned unlimited permission to go to the outside world, as promised by the clan elder. Before leaving, Kurapika promised Pairo that he would return with a doctor and that one day, they would venture into the outside world together. He also promised Pairo to enjoy himself and have fun outside, living adventures like those of the Hunter they had read about in Shilah’s book. Six weeks later, while Kurapika was away, the Kurta clan was approached by the Phantom Troupe for their precious eyes and massacred. The news reported the deaths of all 128 members of the Kurta clan, leaving behind dozens of corpses with their eyes removed. As the sole surviving member of his clan, Kurapika swore to retrieve all the stolen eyes of his people and to stop every member of the Troupe.

Kurapika

Kurapika passed the final test with some difficulty, but he was granted unlimited permission to go to the outside world, as promised by the clan elder. Before leaving, Kurapika promised Pairo that he would return with a doctor and that one day, they would venture into the outside world together. He also promised Pairo that they would enjoy themselves outside and live adventures just like the Hunter in Shilah’s book. Six weeks later, while Kurapika was away, the Kurta clan was approached by the Phantom Troupe and massacred. News reached Kurapika of the deaths of all 128 members of the Kurta clan and dozens of mutilated corpses with their eyes removed in the carnage. As the last surviving member of his clan, Kurapika vowed to recover all the stolen eyes of his people and to stop every member of the Troupe.

ABILITIES AND POWERS

Kurapika’s powers increase significantly throughout the series. Hisoka was the first to take an interest in him, considering him one of the “green fruits” with enormous potential. Although he was initially weaker than Killua, during the Yorknew City arc, he became much stronger than him thanks to his Nen abilities. He is one of the few characters (the others being Hisoka and Silva) to have killed a member of the infamous Phantom Troupe, and a very powerful one at that. His exceptional intelligence is complemented by combat prowess and an iron will, driven by his desire for vengeance. He is also highly versatile, having been seen wielding different weapons.

During his fight with Uvogin, he used both his chains from a distance and close combat techniques. Although he generally maintains a calm and composed demeanour, he tends to lose his temper when the Phantom Troupe is mentioned and often cannot control himself.

Increased Strength: After training with Zebulo, Kurapika managed to open the first gate of the Testing Gate, which has a total weight of 4 tonnes. His strength increases when his eyes turn scarlet: even as a child, he was able to defeat three thugs when enraged. With Nen, his strikes become even more destructive, to the point where he can not only cause pain to Uvogin—despite the latter’s body being impervious to bullets—but also inflict damage on him.

Enhanced Speed and Reflexes: Kurapika struck Uvogin multiple times before he could react and even disappeared in a single leap within an area devoid of hiding spots. He can catch bullets with his chain, which he himself stated could trap a target at a distance of 26 metres in 0.5 seconds.

Improved Agility: Kurapika can leap several metres into the air and strike his opponents from various angles with acrobatic movements without losing his balance. This was first demonstrated when he jumped atop a chandelier during the examination to be hired by Light Nostrade, and later during his confrontation with Uvogin.

Immense Pain Tolerance: Perhaps due to his disgust towards the Troupe and his absolute determination to win the fight, Kurapika seems almost impervious to the pain of having his arm broken by Uvogin. However, in the anime, Hisoka’s blows are shown to cause him significant discomfort.

Genius-Level Intelligence: Kurapika is one of the most intelligent characters in the series. He has outsmarted minds as brilliant as Chrollo's (Kuroro) with his flawless strategies, and his predictions have rarely been wrong. Due to his intelligence, he was appointed as the leader of Neon’s bodyguards following Dalzollene’s disappearance. He can devise precise plans, even during combat, to exploit his opponent's weaknesses to the fullest. His intuition is paired with logical thinking and meticulous preparation.

In the anime, his heightened instincts were demonstrated when he dodged an acorn infused with Nen, despite knowing nothing about internal energy at the time, instantly realising that being hit would have been fatal. He also possesses immense knowledge about almost everything, ranging from psychology to other cultures, history to forensic science—a quality that astonished his peers even when he was a child. Thanks to his insatiable thirst for new information, he learns quickly and has an impressive memory. While he can remain calm in desperate situations, he struggles to stick to his own plans when it comes to the Phantom Troupe, to the point where he might even crack and endanger not only himself but also his friends.

Hand-to-Hand Combat Skills: Although it is uncertain whether he has received formal martial arts training, Kurapika was able to land multiple punches and kicks on a hand-to-hand combat specialist like Uvogin with little to no damage taken himself.

Proficiency with Nunchaku: The extent of his skills in this area is unknown, but before learning Nen, Kurapika used a pair of bokken swords connected by a wire, which he could also wield as a nunchaku.

Sword Mastery: At the beginning of the story, Kurapika’s weapon of choice was a pair of bokken swords which, in the 1999 anime, concealed two blades. He demonstrated his skill in wielding them proficiently during his confrontation with Hisoka.

Master of Chain Manipulation: Kurapika is extremely adept with his chains. He can manoeuvre them with such mastery that they function as natural extensions of his limbs, even entangling targets at nearly 30 metres away in under a second. The chains are tailored for both offensive and defensive purposes (typically the Dowsing Chain) and for immobilising opponents (Chain Jail). When infused with his Nen, they gain abnormal destructive power, as noted by Uvogin, allowing them to shatter rock with ease.

NEN

Kurapika is a Conjurer, a Nen user capable of creating objects from nothing through imagination. However, he becomes a Specialist when his eyes turn red. He learned Nen in a very short time, as acknowledged by several characters in the series, and is regarded as a highly skilled user.

The weapon he conjures is unique: five chains extending from each finger of his right hand. Some of these fingers have been specifically designed to avenge the Phantom Troupe. By applying a condition that puts his own life at stake, his abilities are significantly enhanced. He is capable of concealing his chain using In, allowing him to bind his opponent without their knowledge until it is too late. Since the chains are conjured, they can be extended and inflated to a certain degree. Kurapika is also proficient in all other branches of Nen, employing them effectively in both combat, such as Shu, and analysis, like Gyo. However, the repeated use of his Scarlet Eyes combined with Nen exacts a heavy toll on his mind and body, causing debilitating fevers. After Pakunoda's death, one such fever lasted several days and could not be alleviated, even by Melody’s flute.
