Jujutsu Kaisen: The Story Behind Maki Zenin’s Scars
Share
Maki Zenin surged in popularity following the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen. Fans were captivated by her fierce, belligerent nature, her overwhelming physical prowess, and her unwavering conviction to one day lead the Zenin clan that had once cast her aside.
While her initial character design was simple yet iconic, her appearance has since undergone a dramatic transformation. Here is the story behind the battle scars that now define Maki's seasoned appearance.

Following the tragic death of Mai Zenin and the completion of Maki's Heavenly Restriction, her physique evolved to match the superhuman strength gained from her total break with cursed energy. Yet, her most striking change is the network of burn scars covering her arms and face. These scars serve as a testament to the inner resilience Maki has always possessed, earned in the heat of the series' most brutal conflicts.

Maki's Burn Scars: The Encounter with Jogo

Maki sustained her iconic scars during the chaotic Shibuya Incident. Shortly after her team—including Nanami, Naobito Zenin, and Megumi—defeated the Special Grade spirit Dagon, they were blindsided by Jogo. Seeking vengeance for his fallen comrade, the Special Grade curse unleashed a torrent of flames upon the exhausted sorcerers. Without cursed energy to protect her, Maki bore the full brunt of the fire, resulting in the severe burns that now mark her skin.
According to Yuki Tsukumo, Maki only survived Jogo's immolation because of the innate durability of her body, which was extraordinary even before her Heavenly Restriction reached its peak. While Reverse Cursed Technique treatment ensured her survival, not even the most advanced jujutsu healing could erase the deep-seated burn scars. Far from being "imperfections," these marks have become a visual hallmark of her transition into a battle-hardened and formidable warrior.
Defying the Norms of the Sorcery World

Even before her power peaked, Maki was a revolutionary figure. Existing as a woman within the traditionalist Zenin clan was radical enough, but doing so without cursed energy was considered heresy. Initially, Maki fought to lead the clan and reform it; however, she eventually realized the institution was beyond saving. In honor of Mai, Maki chose to dismantle the clan entirely. Having single-handedly defeated the Zenin elite, she proved she had nothing left to justify to those who had rejected her.
As noted by Momo Nishimiya, the conservative jujutsu society historically valued female sorcerers more for their appearance than their skill. While scars were hailed as trophies for men, they were often viewed as flaws on women. Maki has shattered this double standard. Her scars represent her ascension to a level of power comparable to Toji Fushiguro. She has become a jujutsu anomaly—a sorcerer thriving without cursed energy, possessing a body that defies the very foundations of the jujutsu world.
