Blackbeard’s Pirate Crew
Share
The Blackbeard Pirates are an exceptionally formidable crew and the primary antagonists of the One Piece saga. Led by Marshall D. Teach, better known as "Blackbeard," the crew is structured into ten distinct fleets.

Teach was originally a member of the Whitebeard Pirates and a subordinate of Portgas D. Ace, until he broke the ultimate ironclad rule: killing a crewmate to steal a Devil Fruit. After defecting, he formed his own crew and rose to power with terrifying speed. Following his victory over Ace, Teach replaced Crocodile as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea (Shichibukai), only to abandon the title after infiltrating Impel Down to recruit Level 6 prisoners. During the timeskip, Teach solidified his status as an Emperor (Yonko), usurping the position held by the late Whitebeard.

The Jolly Roger
The flag of the Blackbeard Pirates is as mysterious as its captain. It features three skulls facing different directions—center, left, and right—overlaying four crossbones instead of the traditional two. Fans have long speculated that this unique design hints at the secret nature of Teach's own body and his ability to wield multiple Devil Fruits.

A Crew of Overwhelming Might
The Blackbeard Pirates represent a dark mirror to the Straw Hat Crew. While Luffy recruits members for their dreams and bonds, Teach recruits based on raw power and specialization, specifically hunting for the most heinous criminals in history. Their early strength was proven when they laid waste to Drum Island, forcing King Wapol into exile. Later, they achieved the impossible by infiltrating the world’s most secure prison, Impel Down, and recruiting the monsters of Level 6—prisoners whose very existence the World Government tried to erase from history.
Their collective ruthlessness was showcased at Marineford, where they dealt the finishing blow to the legendary Whitebeard. Following the timeskip, the crew has become even more dangerous. They are currently "Devil Fruit Hunters," scouring the New World to steal powerful abilities from others to augment their own strength. Teach remains the pinnacle of this threat, being the only man in history to command the powers of two Devil Fruits: the Yami Yami no Mi (Darkness) and the Gura Gura no Mi (Quakes).

The recruitment of the Level 6 prisoners—Sanjuan Wolf, Vasco Shot, Catarina Devon, and Avalo Pizarro—gave the crew a legendary status of terror. These individuals were deemed so dangerous that a "death match" was required for them to prove their worth to Teach. The addition of the former Admiral Kuzan (Aokiji) has shifted the balance of power in the world, making the Blackbeard Pirates perhaps the greatest threat the Navy has ever faced.
Ships: From Rafts to Warships
In their early days, the crew famously traveled on a massive, rustic raft composed of four giant logs lashed together. Despite its simple appearance, it carried them through the perilous waters of the Grand Line until it was destroyed by the Knock-Up Stream. After the Battle of Marineford, the crew attempted to secure a Navy warship by trading the captured Jewelry Bonney, but the arrival of Admiral Akainu forced a hasty retreat. They now command a fleet of massive ships, with their flagship appropriately named the Saber of Xebec.
Behind the Scenes: Early Concepts
According to the One Piece Green: Secret Pieces databook, the crew underwent several design changes. Marshall D. Teach was originally conceptualized as "Everything D. Teach." Characters like Vasco Shot were inspired by early "King Joker" designs, and Catarina Devon was initially envisioned with a more conventional "pretty" appearance. These early drafts highlight Oda's evolution in creating a crew that looks as diverse and unsettling as their reputations suggest.
