Instead of outright rejecting their thoughts and sugar-coating his own, Erwin is honest and direct.
He doesn’t give false hope to his troops but remains straightforward. Though his manner of expression might seem too somber, it helps his subordinates to adjust to the constant carnage that surrounds them. He made it clear to his troops that saving Eren was the priority, not fighting the Titans. That said, Erwin had no idea what Eren would do to the world in the future.

During the 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls, Captain Erwin and Captain Levi tried to reveal the identity of the Female Titan. Unfortunately, the operation did not go as planned, as the Female Titan used a special "scream" to alert all the Titans in the area.
As they all prepared to attack the Female Titan, the troops were forced to retreat. It was at this moment that Erwin said something truly profound. He immediately deduced that, since no one had actually seen a person inside the Female Titan get eaten, she must be a member of the Scouts.

These words may not seem significant at first glance, but anyone who watches this scene knows how heartbreaking they are. Erwin’s final words were a question he once asked his father long ago, and the answers led to his father's death.
Just as Levi was about to inject the serum into Erwin’s arm, Erwin quickly pushed his hand away and uttered the same question: "Sir, how do you know for certain that there’s no one on the other side of the walls?"

Erwin doesn’t consider the Titans as a true threat, as they are mindless beings driven by nothing more than animal instincts.
