Tomura Shigaraki
Share

Tenko Shimura, widely known by his villain alias Tomura Shigaraki, was the chilling leader of the League of Villains and the primary antagonist of the series. As the hand-picked successor to All For One, his singular obsession is the total deconstruction of hero society. By targeting All Might, he aims to expose the fragile nature of a peace that he believes blinds the public to the harsh realities of justice.

Following the intense events of the Revival Celebration and the subsequent submission of Re-Destro, Shigaraki orchestrated the merger of the League of Villains and the Meta Liberation Army. This alliance gave birth to the formidable Paranormal Liberation Front, with Shigaraki ascending as its supreme commander.
Appearance
Tenko is a slender young man with deathly pale skin and striking red eyes framed by heavily wrinkled skin. His light blue hair varies in length throughout the series, and his lips are perpetually dry and cracked. Notable physical marks include a small scar over his right eye, another on the left side of his lip, and a mole beneath the right side of his mouth.
In his initial villain ensemble, he is adorned with 14 severed hands—remnants he hauntingly refers to as his "family." These pale grey hands are fastened to his arms, chest, neck, and face, with the central hand on his face being called "Father." This macabre armor is complemented by a simple black outfit: a v-neck shirt and cropped trousers that reveal his ankles, paired with red high-top sneakers worn without socks.
As his power grew following All For One's arrest, his hair lengthened, and he added a long, hooded black coat to his attire. However, his most dramatic transformation occurred after his brutal clash with Re-Destro. During this battle, his original hand-suit was destroyed, and he personally disintegrated the "Father" mask. His hair turned stark white—a physical manifestation of his "awakening." Despite losing several fingers on his left hand and sustaining heavy injuries that required bandages and a leg brace, he emerged more dangerous than ever, often seen in a formal black suit or a fur-collared parka, wearing a single surviving "hand" as a mask.
Personality
Shigaraki possesses a nihilistic and volatile personality. Initially viewed by heroes as a "man-child," he viewed his villainous acts through the lens of a video game, frequently using terms like "final boss," "game over," and "cheats." He was prone to childish tantrums, often scratching his neck until it bled when frustrated. This immaturity, however, masked a deep-seated hatred for a society that he felt ignored his suffering as a child.
As the series progresses, Tomura evolves from a reactive brat into a calculated leader. While he initially despised allies like Dabi and Toga, he eventually developed a genuine, if twisted, sense of camaraderie with his core members. His loyalty to his mentor, All For One, was absolute, though he eventually sought to surpass him. His tragic past—where he accidentally disintegrated his family—is the fuel for his rage. He found a dark liberation in the trauma, eventually declaring his intent to destroy everything currently standing, believing that only total destruction can lead to true freedom.
After his pivotal conversation with Izuku Midoriya at the mall, Shigaraki’s convictions solidified. He stopped fighting for the sake of chaos and began fighting for a vision: a world where the "Symbol of Peace" no longer exists to provide a false sense of security. His transformation into a calm, focused, and terrifyingly powerful entity was completed during the war with the Liberation Army, where he fully embraced his role as the bringer of ruin.
History and Biography
Born Tenko Shimura, he was the son of Kotaro and Nao Shimura and the grandson of the legendary hero Nana Shimura. His childhood was marred by his father’s intense hatred for heroes, which resulted in emotional and physical abuse. While the rest of his family sympathized with Tenko, they remained bystanders to his suffering—a betrayal that would later define his worldview.
The tragedy occurred when Tenko’s Quirk, Decay, manifested prematurely. In a horrific sequence of events, he accidentally disintegrated the family dog, his sister Hana, and his mother. When his father reacted with violence, Tenko struck back with lethal intent, feeling a twisted sense of joy as he turned his abuser to dust. Left alone on the streets, no heroes or civilians came to his aid, reinforcing his belief that society's reliance on heroes is a fatal flaw.
It was All For One who finally reached out, grooming the boy to become a weapon of pure spite. He renamed him Tomura Shigaraki—"Tomura" from the verb for mourning—symbolizing his rebirth as a harbinger of death.
U.S.J. Arc
Shigaraki made his grand debut during the invasion of the Unforeseen Simulation Joint (U.S.J.), aiming to draw out and kill All Might. Despite unleashing the bio-engineered Nomu, the plan failed due to the students' resilience and the arrival of the U.A. faculty. Though defeated and wounded, this encounter served as his "tutorial," teaching him the stakes of his war against the heroes.
U.A. Sports Festival Arc
Watching from the shadows, Shigaraki observed the Sports Festival with keen interest. Directed by All For One to watch Izuku Midoriya and Shoto Todoroki, he began to recognize the next generation of obstacles standing in his way.
Hero Killer Arc
Tomura's attempt to recruit the Hero Killer, Stain, ended in a clash of ideologies. Frustrated by Stain's popularity, Shigaraki unleashed three Nomus in Hosu City to steal the spotlight. Although the Nomus were defeated, the public's fascination with Stain’s conviction infuriated Tomura, eventually leading him to adopt Stain's rhetoric as a tool to recruit more powerful allies like Dabi and Toga.
Final Exams & Forest Training Camp Arcs
After a tense, face-to-face encounter with Izuku Midoriya at a shopping mall, Shigaraki refined his goals. He ordered the Vanguard Action Squad to attack the U.A. summer camp, successfully kidnapping Katsuki Bakugo. His objective was to "break" the young hero and recruit him, demonstrating the League's growing influence and strategic reach.
Hideout Raid Arc
The kidnapping of Bakugo led to a massive hero counter-offensive. While Shigaraki watched All Might face off against All For One, he was forced to retreat, leaving his mentor behind. The arrest of All For One and the retirement of All Might left a power vacuum that Shigaraki was determined to fill, fueled by the rage of losing his master.
Shie Hassaikai Arc
Shigaraki's path crossed with Overhaul (Kai Chisaki), leading to a tense and bloody rivalry. After a temporary and uneasy alliance, Shigaraki got the last laugh. As Overhaul was being transported to prison, Tomura intercepted the convoy, decayed Overhaul's arms to render his Quirk useless, and stole the Quirk-destroying bullets—solidifying his position as the true king of the underworld.
Meta Liberation Army Arc
In the weeks leading up to the Hero Ranking event, the League of Villains is at its lowest point, struggling with a severe lack of resources. Tomura leads a desperate raid on the Creature Rejection Clan's base, where he ends up disintegrating their leader after a futile search for valuables. The tension within the League is high, with Spinner openly questioning Shigaraki’s direction and their apparent stagnation since Kurogiri’s capture.
The situation escalates when Gigantomachia, All For One's colossal bodyguard, appears to test Tomura’s worthiness as a successor. As Shigaraki struggles to survive the titan's onslaught, Dr. Kyudai Garaki contacts him, offering a deal: if Tomura can subdue the monster, the Doctor will grant him unparalleled power. For over a month, Tomura fights a grueling war of attrition against Machia, refusing to sleep and refining his combat instincts until he is interrupted by the Meta Liberation Army.
Led by Re-Destro, the MLA kidnaps Giran and threatens the League with an army of 110,000 warriors. Tomura tactically leads the League to Deika City, intending to use the MLA’s sheer numbers to exhaust Gigantomachia. As the battle unfolds, the physical and mental strain begins to break Tomura’s psychological barriers, causing suppressed memories of his childhood to resurface. His Quirk begins to evolve, transforming from a simple touch-based attack into an infectious wave of destruction that wipes out entire squadrons in an instant.

During the final showdown with Re-Destro, Tomura undergoes a complete "awakening." He finally accepts his true nature as a bringer of ruin, disintegrating the disembodied hands of his family—including his father's—to free himself from his past. With a manic laugh, he unleashes the full power of Decay, leveling the entire city of Deika. Recognizing Tomura as the embodiment of true liberation, Re-Destro yields his army and resources to him. The League merges with the MLA to form the Paranormal Liberation Front, with Shigaraki as its Supreme Commander.
Endeavor Agency Arc
While his lieutenants mobilize their forces, Tomura retreats to the Doctor’s laboratory for a transformative surgery. This four-month process is designed to grant him a body capable of wielding All For One and surpassing the power of the One For All. Despite the warning of hellish agony, Shigaraki embraces the procedure, driven by his singular goal: to erase the "Symbol of Peace" and everything All Might left behind.
Paranormal Liberation War Arc
The heroes' raid on Jaku Hospital interrupts Shigaraki’s enhancement mid-process. Though he briefly dies due to the destruction of his life-support capsule, he is jolted back to life by a surge of electricity and sheer hatred. Upon waking, he releases a cataclysmic wave of Decay that vaporizes the hospital and the surrounding city within seconds, instantly turning the tide of the war.
Possessing near-infinite regeneration and physical strength rivaling All Might's, Shigaraki engages Endeavor in a high-stakes aerial battle. Guided by the vestige of All For One, he targets Izuku Midoriya to claim the One For All. Even against a combined force of top-tier heroes and Deku's newfound Quirks, Shigaraki remains an unstoppable force of nature, dominating the battlefield until the immense strain of his unfinished operation begins to tear his body apart.
Skills and Abilities
Quirks
- Decay (崩壊 Hōkai): A highly lethal Quirk that allows him to disintegrate anything he touches with his hands. Once contact is made, the object or body part begins to crumble away. Tenko appears to be immune to his own power. His Quirk has evolved significantly; he eventually became capable of destroying one of Chisaki’s guards instantly with minimal contact, a feat far more advanced than his earlier encounter with Shota Aizawa. His decay also possesses an infectious quality—when he rotted Chisaki's arms, the effect began to spread upward, forcing Shigaraki to sever them to prevent complete disintegration. During his battle with Re-Destro, Tomura experienced a "reawakening," enabling him to trigger decay without needing all five fingers, as seen when he partially disintegrated one of Re-Destro's fingers despite having three of his own fingers destroyed. Upon breaking his mental shackles, his Quirk gained the power to level an entire city.
Tomura has also demonstrated the ability to create chain reactions; by grabbing a single soldier of the Meta Liberation Army, he managed to disintegrate a vast crowd of soldiers simultaneously without direct contact.
Because his Quirk requires contact with solid matter, it can be neutralized by fluid or particle manipulation, such as the sand-based body of the hero Snatch.
The Quirk's effects are also nullified if the user wears gloves.
- All For One: This Quirk allows him to steal the powers of others, with the exception of One For All. It was revealed that his mentor’s version was merely a copy, while the original Quirk was passed down to Tomura.
- Life Force: This Quirk grants its user double the lifespan of a normal human.
- Projection: Tomura appears to have inherited the various Quirks stolen by his predecessor, allowing him to fire devastating blasts of compressed air similar to All For One.
- Search: Using this Quirk, he can track and monitor up to 100 individuals simultaneously, identifying their exact locations and weak points.
- Radio Waves: Tomura can interfere with radio frequencies and cause communication devices to malfunction.

Expertise
Overall Prowess: Regarded as one of Japan's most formidable villains, Tomura stands toe-to-toe with professional heroes through a combination of physical might and keen analytical skills. As the leader of the League of Villains, he commands absolute authority over powerful subordinates. During the USJ incident, he boldly confronted Eraser Head, successfully using his Decay Quirk to shatter the hero's elbow. Tomura’s confidence was such that he believed he could take on Midoriya, Todoroki, Bakugo, and Kirishima simultaneously without even knowing their Quirks. His battle with Re-Destro saw his abilities skyrocket beyond normal human limits. Re-Destro noted that had Tomura possessed this level of power during the Kamino incident, he could have effortlessly wiped out the Pro Heroes present even without his primary Quirk. Following this conflict, he not only defeated Re-Destro but secured the loyalty of the Liberation Army and successfully subjugated Gigantomachia.

- Enhanced Strength: Tomura possesses significant physical power, notably demonstrated when he restrained Izuku by the throat using only four fingers while his victim struggled to break free.
- Enhanced Speed: He moves with exceptional agility, allowing him to close gaps and apply his Quirk with split-second contact. He was able to intercept Tsuyu Asui instantly and track Izuku’s movements at speeds comparable to All Might. Even while exhausted during the war with the Liberation Army, he scaled walls with surprising speed to evade attacks before counterattacking. Re-Destro was visibly shocked by Tomura's burst of speed, which he maintained despite being severely wounded.
- High Intelligence: Sharply intuitive and analytical, Tomura can decipher the mechanics of an opponent's Quirk simply by watching them. He exploited Eraser Head’s weaknesses almost immediately upon engaging him. He also correctly deduced that All Might was weakening based on the hero's declining speed. After a month of battling Machia, he realized the giant was slowing down, correctly predicting his eventual submission.
- Immense Durability: Tomura survived a grueling month-and-a-half-long confrontation with Gigantomachia, fighting for over 48 hours straight without sleep. Despite the horrific injuries sustained against the Liberation Army, he continued to fight their leader without a single complaint.

Physical Modifications: After assuming leadership of the Paranormal Liberation Front, Tomura underwent extensive body modification surgery performed by Daruma Ujiko. While the specifics remain classified, the procedure was designed to make him stronger than the wielder of One For All. During his clash with Endeavor, these enhancements allowed him to overpower both Endeavor and Ryukyu purely through raw physical force without even activating a Quirk.
Equipment
Disembodied Hands: The most iconic feature of Tomura's costume is the fourteen preserved hands covering his upper body and face. These are the remains of his family members, whom he accidentally killed when his Quirk first manifested, along with two street thugs he killed shortly after. Preserved by Daruma Ujiko and returned to him by All For One, these hands serve a psychological purpose; they provide Tomura with a sense of calm and stability, though they occasionally cause nausea. During his duel with Re-Destro, most were destroyed. By finally disintegrating his father’s hand—the one usually covering his face—he symbolically liberated himself from his traumatic past. The hand remaining on the back of his head belongs to his grandmother, Nana Shimura.
Relationships
The League of Villains
All For One
All For One is Tenko’s mentor and savior, having rescued him from the streets as a child to groom him as his successor. During the Kamino incident, All For One reaffirmed his dedication to Tenko, stating that his every action was intended to help the boy reach his goals.
He took great pride in Tenko's growth, particularly the formation of the Vanguard Action Squad. During the battle with All Might, All For One prioritized Tenko’s safety, forcing the League to retreat through Kurogiri's portals despite Tenko's desperate protests. It remains unclear if Tomura is aware that All For One was responsible for the death of his grandmother, Nana Shimura.
Kurogiri
Kurogiri served as Tomura's loyal protector and handler, a role assigned to him by All For One. Tenko valued him immensely, especially during the USJ raid. While Kurogiri generally followed orders, he acted as a voice of reason, once preventing Tenko from attacking Dabi and Toga by reminding him that a leader must recruit allies, not drive them away.
Tomura was visibly frustrated by Kurogiri's capture, lamenting his absence and proving how much he relied on him.
Dr. Kyudai Garaki
Shigaraki has known the Doctor since his childhood rescue. Their relationship was largely business-like; the Doctor was the one who preserved the hands of Tenko's family.
Initially critical of Tomura’s lack of progress following All For One's arrest, the Doctor challenged him to prove his worth. When Tomura declared his intent to "destroy everything," the Doctor was moved by his sheer passion. He eventually agreed to grant Tomura his full resources, but only after the villain successfully forced Gigantomachia to submit.
Gigantomachia
Initial impressions were mixed; Tomura was awed by the giant's power but quickly grew to loathe him when Machia rejected him as a "weak" successor. Machia wept over Tomura's perceived inferiority to All For One, refusing to acknowledge his authority.
However, Tomura's resolve never wavered. After weeks of relentless combat, he vowed to bring the titan to his knees, eventually earning the giant's genuine respect through his growth in the battle against the Liberation Army.
Dabi
Their first meeting was hostile; Dabi was unimpressed by Tomura, and Tomura found Dabi’s attitude repulsive. Dabi even refused to give his real name. Their mutual irritation nearly turned deadly until Kurogiri intervened.
Despite this rocky start, Dabi became a core member of the League, carrying out Tomura's orders and serving as a key recruiter. Their relationship evolved into one of mutual utility, with Dabi even taking inspiration from Tomura’s ruthlessness during the war with the Liberation Army.
Himiko Toga
Tomura initially dismissed Toga as "childish" and was annoyed by her obsession with Stain. He even attempted to kill her during their introduction. However, his view of her changed over time.
He eventually came to see her and the others as reliable comrades rather than disposable pawns. When Overhaul requested Toga and Twice as temporary subordinates, Tomura was protective, calling them the "backbone" of his operation. He personally reassured Toga of his trust in her, even removing his "Father" hand to speak to her with a calm, sincere expression.
Spinner
The bond between them was initially strained by the League's poverty. Spinner questioned Tomura’s leadership as they were forced to scavenge for resources.
However, their relationship deepened during the war against the Liberation Army. Spinner showed genuine concern for Tomura’s well-being during the fighting and was moved by his leader's immense display of power. He has since become one of Tomura’s most loyal and attentive supporters.
Twice
Tomura viewed Twice as an indispensable asset. He refused to let Overhaul manipulate him and expressed deep personal confidence in Twice’s abilities.
Twice, in turn, was fiercely devoted. He attempted to duplicate the Quirk-destroying bullets for Tomura and later used his "Sad Man's Parade" to protect Tomura and clear a path to Re-Destro. He often worried about Tomura’s fatigue, offering his own body as a place for his leader to rest.
Other Villains
Stain
Tomura harbored a deep resentment for the Hero Killer. During their only meeting, Stain wounded Tomura and lectured him on the necessity of conviction. Tomura was infuriated that Stain’s ideology overshadowed his own actions in the public eye, especially after the Hosu incident.
However, after a chance encounter with Izuku Midoriya, Tomura realized that he could use Stain’s popularity to his advantage. He adopted Stain’s notoriety as a foundation to build the League, though his ultimate goal remained the total destruction of the society Stain sought to "reform."
Overhaul
Tomura’s hatred for Kai Chisaki was absolute, fueled by Overhaul’s arrogance and the murder of Magne. Though they entered a temporary, tense alliance, Tomura was merely waiting for the right moment to strike.
After Midoriya defeated Overhaul, Tomura intercepted the police convoy. In a final act of revenge, he stole Overhaul's life's work—the Quirk-erasing drugs—and disintegrated the villain's arms, leaving him powerless and mocking his loss.
Re-Destro
Initially viewing the Meta Liberation Army as a nuisance, Tomura’s attitude shifted to one of cold amusement. Re-Destro attempted to blackmail the League, forcing a confrontation in Deika City. Tomura ultimately broke Re-Destro’s spirit and body, leading the CEO to surrender his entire organization and resources to Shigaraki, recognizing him as the true herald of liberation.
U.A. High School
Izuku Midoriya
Midoriya and Tomura serve as perfect ideological opposites. While Midoriya represents the pinnacle of heroism and the legacy of All Might, Tomura represents the ultimate failure of that same system. During their encounter at the shopping mall, Tomura threatened Izuku’s life while seeking to understand the difference between himself and Stain.
Izuku’s answers helped Tomura crystallize his own hatred, leading him to conclude that All Might was the root of his frustration. Their relationship is defined by a mutual promise: the next time they meet, it will be a fight to the death.
Katsuki Bakugo
Tomura took an interest in Bakugo after witnessing his volatile performance at the Sports Festival, believing the boy's inner darkness made him a candidate for the League. He orchestrated Bakugo's kidnapping, only to be met with fierce defiance. Bakugo’s unwavering admiration for All Might and his refusal to join the villains made him a permanent enemy in Tomura's eyes.
Pro Heroes
All Might
Tomura's hatred for All Might is the driving force of his existence. He views the "Symbol of Peace" as a fraud whose existence creates a complacent society that ignores those in need.
This bitterness stems from Tomura’s childhood; when tragedy struck, no hero—including All Might—came to save him. He finds All Might’s constant smile disgusting. The rivalry became even more personal when All Might defeated All For One. However, the hero's perspective changed when he discovered Tomura is the grandson of his mentor, Nana Shimura, shifting his view from seeing Tomura as a mere criminal to a tragic soul he failed to save.
Family
Tomura suppressed his childhood memories until his battle with Re-Destro triggered their return.
He once shared a loving bond with his mother, sister, and grandparents. However, the awakening of his Quirk resulted in their accidental deaths. When his father, Kotaro, reacted with violence rather than compassion during the carnage, Tenko’s trauma turned into murderous intent, and he killed his father deliberately.
In a chilling realization, Tomura admitted that seeing his family disintegrate brought him a sense of relief, viewing the destruction not as a tragedy, but as a liberation.
Hana Shimura
Tenko was very close to his older sister, who encouraged his dream of becoming a hero despite their father's strict rules. Her death was the first he witnessed, and the memory of her hand remains a haunting, central part of his psychological landscape.
Kotaro Shimura
Their relationship was defined by fear and resentment. Kotaro, traumatized by his own mother (Nana Shimura) abandoning him for hero work, strictly forbade any mention of heroes in his house. His physical abuse of Tenko eventually pushed the boy over the edge, making Kotaro the only family member Tomura killed with conscious intent.
