Tobio Kageyama

Tobio Kageyama is the starting setter for the Karasuno High School volleyball club. Often called a "prodigy" or an "absolute genius" by coaches across the prefecture, he possesses unparalleled technical precision and game sense. However, he carries the heavy burden of his middle school nickname, "The King of the Court"—a title given not in praise, but as a criticism of his formerly dictatorial and arrogant playing style.
Since joining Karasuno, Kageyama has begun to shed his "lonely king" persona. With the help of his new teammates, he is relearning what it truly means to trust his hitters and play as part of a unified team.

History
The Fall of the King
At Kitagawa Daiichi Middle School, Kageyama was infamous for his perfectionism and abrasive attitude. He demanded absolute obedience from his teammates, often tossing balls that were physically impossible to hit. This peaked during a crucial match when his teammates, fed up with his tyranny, collectively refused to jump for his toss. The sight of the ball hitting the floor untouched remains Kageyama's deepest trauma, fueling his fear of abandonment and his hatred for his "King" nickname.
Season 1: A New Beginning
Upon arriving at Karasuno, Kageyama is shocked to find Shoyo Hinata—the boy he defeated in middle school—standing in the same gym. Their immediate rivalry and inability to cooperate leads the team captain, Daichi Sawamura, to literally throw them out of the gym. Daichi issues a stern ultimatum: they cannot join the club until they prove they can work together as teammates.
To get back into the gym, Kageyama and Hinata challenge the other first-years to a 3-on-3 match. Kageyama initially refuses to toss to Hinata, believing him to be unskilled. However, under the secret guidance of Sugawara and Tanaka, the two begin early morning practices. During these sessions, Kageyama begins to realize that Hinata’s raw speed and reflex might be the key to unlocking a new level of play.

During the pivotal 3-on-3 match against the cynical Kei Tsukishima, Kageyama is pushed to his limit. When Hinata blindly trusts Kageyama’s toss, they perform the first "God-Fast Quick" attack. Kageyama realizes that he doesn't need to command his hitters; he needs to serve them. By adjusting his toss perfectly to Hinata's peak height, Kageyama finds a hitter who will never turn his back on a toss. Karasuno wins the match, and Kageyama is officially welcomed as the team's new "Control Tower."
The Evolution of a Genius
Kageyama’s journey is one of technical mastery meeting emotional growth. Whether he is performing his "murderous" jump serve or executing a pinpoint back-toss, he remains the tactical heart of Karasuno. His rivalry with Oikawa and his bond with Hinata continue to push him to evolve from a "King" into a true teammate.
