One of the standout highlights of My Hero Academia is the character of Shoto Todoroki, a student who delivers some of the best lines in the series, almost always referencing either his resentment towards his father, his rivalries with others, or his quest to become a hero.

Todoroki is typically detached and reserved, but he shows his true colours with this quote.
He isn’t afraid to tell someone when he thinks he’s better than them. It doesn’t come across as mean-spirited, just brutally honest. After all, he’s one of the most skilled students at U.A. High School.

8. "I know how grudges like this can cloud a person’s vision."
Noticing Tenya Iida’s visible anger after his brother was attacked by Stain, a supervillain, Todoroki advises him not to let it turn into a grudge.
Reflecting on his own past, Todoroki notes that such grudges are, in his view, useless and only serve to "cloud one’s judgement" rather than truly help in achieving dreams or fulfilling destiny.
7. "I will win with only my mother’s power."
Todoroki eventually learns that the only way for him to fully reconcile with his past is to accept it. However, as a slight to his father, he decides to use only his “cold” side, which he inherited from his mother, even though using both his “cold” and “hot” sides would make him a far more powerful fighter.
He doesn’t shy away from putting in the extra effort to become who he wants to be, all while avoiding becoming what his father wanted him to be.

After Deku, Iida, and Todoroki take down Stain, Police Chief Kenji Tsuragamae reprimands them for using their Quirks without having the proper licenses. Todoroki insists that he did the right thing, asking, “Isn’t it a hero’s job to save people?”
In the end, Tsuragamae seems to agree, as he privately thanks them for their actions despite their violation of the law.

Actions speak louder than words, and this is a point Todoroki quickly drives home with this quote.
Todoroki’s statement revolves around the idea that, in a fight, words are only useful if they can have a psychological impact on the opponent. Ultimately, he advocates for staying silent and focusing on the task at hand.

4. "Give it your all, Midoriya. I’m going to defeat you."
Several characters form rivalries with Deku early on in My Hero Academia, but Todoroki is so emotionally invested in his that it’s impossible not to mention.
The only reason Todoroki wants to beat Deku is to prove he’s the best fighter, as he believes himself to be. This sportsmanlike attitude makes both characters, despite their rivalry, worthy of support, as neither harbours ill intentions.

Among Todoroki’s harshest lines is this incredible jab.
Todoroki is surprisingly mature for someone still in high school, to the point where he openly scorns an older person for having less control over their emotions than he does.

This leads to several awkward moments between them, such as when Endeavor congratulates Todoroki on his performance during the Sports Festival (albeit somewhat insincerely), and Todoroki asserts that the only reason for his success was that he completely forgot about Endeavor during the fight. Admittedly, as this quote suggests, even Todoroki himself isn’t entirely sure what to make of it all.

During his battle against Deku, Todoroki notices that his rival is actually trying to encourage him to unleash his full potential. This surprises the crowd but only momentarily unsettles Todoroki.
In the quote that follows, he applauds Deku’s ambition, while committing to it himself, openly declaring his desire to become a hero.
