Soshiro Hoshina
Soshiro Hoshina is the vice-captain of the third division of the defence forces, and a member of the Hoshina family, a renowned clan of swordsmen from the Muromachi period. He is also the younger brother of Soichiro Hoshina.
Soshiro is one of the main protagonists of Kaiju No. 8: B-Side, a spin-off series of the Kaiju No. 8 manga.

Appearance
Soshiro is a young, athletic man of average height with a small but muscular build and short, dark purple hair cut in a square shape. His red eyes (purple in the anime) are usually closed, and he always has a cheerful expression on his face, except when serious situations cause him to display a more imposing expression with his eyes open.
On duty, Soshiro wears the standard uniform of the Defence Forces. He also wears the standard combat suit used by members of the Defence Forces on the battlefield. When he wears Weapon No. 10, Soshiro dons a combat suit with light purple scale-like armour with green outlines, a long mechanical tail, and the signature Kaiju No. 10 eye in the centre of the chest plate.
As a child, Soshiro largely resembled his current appearance, mostly wearing traditional training attire.

Soshiro is rather laid-back, always smiling; it is very rare to see him downcast. He seems to enjoy teasing others, particularly Kafka Hibino, whom he considers a comedic figure. However, he does have serious moments where he speaks firmly and opens his eyes to emphasise the seriousness of his words. Soshiro also likes to tease Captain Gen Narumi of the First Division. Despite his relaxed and friendly appearance, Soshiro is very intelligent and intuitive. He was the only one to correctly suspect Kafka's identity as Kaiju No. 8, which is one of the main reasons he accepted him into the Third Division despite his failure at the exam—he wanted to keep an eye on him.
Soshiro has a great, though hidden, sense of loyalty towards the Defence Force and feels deeply grateful to his captain, Mina Ashiro, for allowing him into her division. His sense of loyalty to his role within the force is so strong that he sees it, deep down, as his only reason for living. Soshiro is also very appreciative, as seen when he spoke to Kafka two months after proving his identity as Kaiju No. 8 and thanked him for saving his life and the lives of his subordinates, showing that he bore no grudge towards him.
Soshiro is also very close to his family and his swordsmanship tradition. His father’s scepticism about his abilities and his feelings of inferiority towards his older brother, Soichiro Hoshina, led Soshiro to perfect his swordsmanship and to identify his entire being with the art of the blade. He was also seen training alone, despite it being very late at night, replaying in his mind the battle he had with Kaiju No. 8. This further proves that Soshiro is also very hardworking and determined to be strong enough to defeat all Kaiju. However, during his battle with Kaiju No. 12, No. 10 delved into Soshiro’s psyche and made him realise that he still enjoyed wielding the sword, with Soshiro eventually accepting his simple-mindedness as his main resolution for fighting and improving.
Soshiro is aware that times have changed and that the era of swords is long gone, and that most members of the Defence Force disdain his fighting style. Despite this, he believes it is his duty to wield his sword, as he has spent most of his life training and perfecting his swordsmanship, and it is the only way he knows to fight the Kaiju. In combat, Soshiro is sharp enough to notice his opponent's mental state as well as the mood of the skirmish itself, alerting him each time a battle is going in his favour or not, allowing him to adapt on the spot.
Powers and abilities
Overall abilities: Soshiro is the vice-captain of the third division of the Defence Forces and a powerful fighter, capable of fighting on par with Kaiju No. 10. Although his skills disadvantage him when facing large Kaiju, Soshiro’s ability to defeat small to medium-sized Kaiju in combat surpasses that of the captain of the First Division, "the strongest anti-Kaiju fighter in Japan," General Narumi.
Since he began wielding Weapon No. 10, Soshiro’s physical attributes have been diminished due to the weapon being the first Kaiju weapon in the history of the Defence Force to have its own consciousness. However, when he reaches a temporary synchronization status, Soshiro is able to easily overpower minor Kaiju, with the potential to fully utilise his Weapon No. 10.
Against Kaiju No. 12, the enhanced and final version of Kaiju No. 10, Soshiro is initially overwhelmed by the monster due to its speed, strength, and combat capabilities far surpassing those of No. 10. But after revealing his secret weapon, Soshiro is able to gain the upper hand over No. 12 for a short period before the monster adapts to his fighting style. Ultimately, after a very difficult battle, Soshiro is able to defeat No. 12 with a new technique he develops during their fight.

High combat power: As the vice-captain of the Defence Force, Soshiro is capable of using a large portion of the power of his combat suit. His maximum combat power when wearing a standard Defence Force combat suit is 92%, but overusing the suit’s power will cause it to overheat. When he wears Weapon No. 10, he is capable of using 100% of his suit's power.Enhanced strength: Soshiro possesses incredible physical strength, capable of easily slicing through the incredibly tough skin of Kaiju No. 8. He is also able to cut through the tough hide of Kaiju No. 10 despite taking severe damage, something even Kikoru Shinomiya couldn’t do with her own personal weapon. During his training session with Kafka, and without wearing a combat suit, Soshiro is able to overwhelm Kafka with only a few punches and sends him flying a great distance with a single punch while holding a reinforced training bag.Massive speed and reflexes: Soshiro is an extremely fast fighter with extraordinary reflexes. He is shown killing a Kaiju with no notable movement. Kafka (in his Kaiju form) is shocked by the speed at which he moves and remarks that his speed is on an entirely different level compared to Kikoru's. His speed is so great that he even impressed Kaiju No. 10 with how quickly he can move. He is also able to dodge the extremely fast attacks from both Kaiju No. 10 and Kaiju No. 12 at close range.
Enhanced durability: Soshiro is an incredibly resilient fighter, as shown when he emerges completely unscathed after being sent flying through a building by Kaiju No. 10.Enhanced endurance: Soshiro has immense physical endurance. Although he was severely injured after taking a powerful hit from Kaiju No. 10, he is able to keep fighting even after his suit has overheated. After far exceeding the limit of his suit, he is still able to push beyond and use 63% of his suit's power despite being extremely fatigued.
Master swordsman: Soshiro is an extremely skilled swordsman from the Hoshina family, a family of Kaiju hunters dating back to the Muromachi period, and is one of the most powerful blade specialists in the Defence Force. When using his custom-made twin swords or katana, Soshiro can quickly defeat his opponents with extreme speed and precision. According to his father, even at a very young age, Soshiro was considered a prodigy during the Edo period due to his extraordinary mastery of swordsmanship. Soshiro further demonstrated his swordsmanship by inventing a new form in the middle of his fight against Kaiju No. 12. His older brother and captain of the Sixth Division, Soichiro Hoshina, claims that when it comes to the blade, Soshiro stands above all members of the Hoshina family, past and present.Martial arts mastery: Although specialised in swordsmanship, Soshiro is also a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant. He is capable of using Isao Shinomiya's fighting style with great proficiency and can easily defeat Kafka Hibino during their training session. His close combat ability is considered the strongest in the entire Defence Force. He was even able to evolve Isao's combat techniques.Leadership skills: As vice-captain, Soshiro has shown excellent leadership abilities, capable of guiding an entire platoon and multiple officers on the battlefield during major battles.Sharp intelligence: Soshiro is a very intelligent man. He is shown explaining in detail the disasters caused by Kaiju No. 9 and its abilities to the Eastern Division of the Defence Force and is able to deduce No. 9's location. He also enjoys planning for the future, as seen when he asked Konomi Okonogi to develop a new secret weapon in case Kaiju No. 9 was observing his battle with Kaiju No. 10.
Combat style
Soshiro’s unleashed combat power when it comes to using firearms is weak, which is why he prefers close-range sword combat. Unlike other officers in the Defence Force, Soshiro uses his family’s unique fighting style, known as the Hoshina Style. His extraordinary mastery of swordsmanship allows him to brutally kill a Kaiju in front of Kafka without the latter noticing any movement from him. After numerous battles, Soshiro even managed to create an entirely new form in the middle of his fight against Kaiju No. 12, showing just how much his double-sword technique had improved over the years.
Soshiro’s area of expertise within his style is the sword technique, used with a double-blade form. His skills and power allow him to easily engage in hand-to-hand combat with Class Identified Kaiju such as No. 8, No. 10, and No. 12. He has also proven to use the quick strike technique and single-blade form with remarkable ability, although the latter is Soichiro’s speciality.
Equipment Combat suit (formerly): On the battlefield, Soshiro wears a standard Defence Force combat suit.Rifle: Despite a low release of power when firing, Soshiro is shown wielding a rifle on the battlefield.Breathing mask: Soshiro wears a breathing mask in combat.
Digital weapon 10: Soshiro’s personal Numbers weapon, provided by Izumo Tech, is a special combat suit made from the body of Kaiju No. 10. The suit features light purple scale-like armour with green outlines, a long mechanical tail, and the distinctive No. 10 eye in the centre of the chest plate. It is the first Numbers weapon in the history of the Defence Force to have its own will.Twin swords: Marked SW-2033 and provided by Izumo Tech, Soshiro’s personal weapons are a pair of twin swords. The blades are sharp and durable enough to slice through incredibly tough Kaiju like Kaiju No. 8 and Kaiju No. 10. It is shown that he has several spare swords on hand.Katana: Marked SW-1023, Soshiro uses a single katana as his secret weapon, although this is a weapon typically used by his older brother. The blade is sharp enough to easily cut through Kaiju No. 12. He is shown to have several spare katanas available.
