Ri Shin
Ri Shin, formerly known simply as Shin, is the central protagonist of Kingdom. Rising from the status of a war orphan and slave, he has become a General of Qin and the renowned leader of the Hi Shin Army.

Appearance
At the start of the series, Shin is a slim but muscular 14-year-old boy with slanted hazel eyes and spiky dark hair styled with a distinctive "rat tail." As he ages through countless campaigns, his features become more pronounced and his physique grows considerably more rugged and powerful. By the time he reaches the rank of General, his hair has grown longer, and his presence commands the battlefield.
Shin's signature look consists of a blue sleeveless tunic tied with a fabric belt. Initially appearing as a scruffy peasant in straw sandals, he gradually upgraded his attire as his rank increased, eventually adopting Qin-style shoes and white trousers. Despite his rising status, he maintained a relatively humble "peasant-warrior" aesthetic for many years.
His transition into heavy armor began during the Sanyou campaign. He eventually settled on a set of sky-blue scaled armor, featuring armbands adorned with the clan markings of Kyou Kai’s headband. Following the death of Duke Hyou, Shin added neck guard spikes to his right shoulder pad as a tribute to the fallen Great General. Throughout his journey, he has always carried the sword of his deceased best friend, Hyou, on his back, while keeping the glaive of Ou Ki and the shield of Duke Hyou as sacred inheritances for when he is truly ready to wield them.
Personality
Brash, impetuous, and hot-tempered, Shin possesses a heart of gold and an unbreakable will. He is fiercely loyal to his friends, a trait born from his vow to avenge Hyou. His stubbornness is his greatest strength, allowing him to challenge and overcome opponents who are vastly superior in experience and strength, such as Ren Pa and Hou Ken.
Though he often bickers with Ka Ryo Ten like a protective older brother, he has matured into a charismatic leader. His ability to inspire his troops—and even earn the respect of legendary figures like Yo Tan Wa and Ri Boku—stems from his raw sincerity and his refusal to back down from the dream of unifying China.
Goal
Shin’s ultimate ambition is to become the Greatest General Under the Heavens. He carries Hyou’s dream alongside his own, striving to prove his worth through legendary feats and by acting as the "sword" that will realize Ei Sei’s vision of a unified China.
Relationships
Ei Sei
The young King of Qin and Shin’s closest ally. While they initially clashed, Shin recognized Sei’s iron will. They share a deep bond of friendship, with Sei viewing Shin as his most trusted "sword" and Shin addressing the King casually by his name—a testament to their unique equality and shared dream.
Kyou Kai
Initially a cold assassin, Kyou Kai found a home and a new purpose through Shin. She is fanatically loyal to him, even sacrificing her own life force to save his. Their relationship is one of mutual respect and budding romantic tension, especially following her confession of her feelings to him.
Ka Ryo Ten
One of Shin's first companions, Ten is the brilliant strategist of the Hi Shin Unit. Shin views her as his younger sister and his "precious family," relying on her intellect to guide his martial might on the battlefield.
Ou Ki
The "Monstrous Bird of Qin" served as Shin’s greatest mentor. Before his death, Ou Ki saw the potential in Shin, calling him a "sprout" of the new generation and entrusting him with his legendary glaive, a burden and honor that has defined Shin’s path as a General.
Duke Hyou
An instinctive Great General who saw Shin as a son. Under his tutelage, Shin’s own instinctive abilities began to awaken. Duke Hyou’s death at the hands of Hou Ken left a permanent mark on Shin, who now carries the Duke’s shield and leads his former soldiers.
Capabilities and Martial Prowess
Shin is a martial powerhouse who leads from the front. While he lacks formal education in strategy, he compensates with Monstrous Strength and Relentless Tenacity. When pushed to his limits, he can surpass his physical boundaries through sheer rage and willpower.
- Master Swordsman: Self-taught through thousands of duels with Hyou, Shin can cleave through armored soldiers with ease. He later mastered the art of focusing his power on a single point to penetrate the hide of monstrous foes like Ran Kai.
- Mastery of the Glaive: After inheriting Ou Ki’s glaive, Shin spent years training to master its immense weight. He eventually reached a level where he could split the Bushin Hou Ken in half.
- Instinctive General: Shin possesses a rare "Instinctive" talent for warfare. Much like Duke Hyou, he can "smell" the flow of battle, sensing traps and opportunities that strategic generals might miss. His instincts have evolved to the point where even Ri Boku compares his maneuvers to those of the late Duke Hyou.
- Leadership: Shin’s greatest weapon is his charisma. He can "awaken" his troops, driving them to perform miracles even when exhausted and starving.
